What is A-257 — Notification of moving to Iceland from a Nordic country?

Form A-257, 'Flutningstilkynning frá Norðurlöndum til Íslands', is Registers Iceland's (Þjóðskrá Íslands) notification of a move to Iceland from another Nordic country. It is for citizens of Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden who move their legal domicile (lögheimili) to Iceland from another Nordic country, including the Åland Islands, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The same form registers your domicile in Iceland and, where needed, applies for an Icelandic ID number (kennitala).

It is a one-page form in Icelandic, with instructions on the back. Up to seven people who move together — spouses or registered cohabiting partners and children under 18 — go in one table, followed by the date of the move and the new address in Iceland, the last address abroad, remarks, and the contact details and signatures of up to two people. The move must be notified in person within seven days, at Registers Iceland's service desk or at the local police office, and everyone moving, children included, must be there with valid ID.

Who needs to fill out A-257 — Notification of moving to Iceland from a Nordic country?

• Citizens of Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden moving their legal domicile to Iceland from another Nordic country.
• Families moving together: the form covers spouses or registered cohabiting partners and children under 18 on one sheet.
• People moving from the Faroe Islands, Greenland or the Åland Islands, which the form counts as Nordic countries.
• Nordic citizens who don't yet have an Icelandic kennitala — the notification also serves as an application for one where needed.
• Children aged 18 or over who move with their parents notify their own move, on their own form.

When to use A-257 — Notification of moving to Iceland from a Nordic country

• Within seven days of moving to Iceland from another Nordic country.
• When the stay is planned to be six months or longer — the instructions say Nordic citizens staying for less than six months are not required to register a domicile in Iceland.
• When a parent moves to Iceland with a child while the other parent, who shares custody, stays in the country they are moving from; that parent's signature or written consent is then needed.
• Not when a child moves from one custodial parent to the other — that move is notified at the District Commissioner (sýslumaður) when the parents are not married or in registered cohabitation.

What you need before you start

• Given names, middle names and surnames of everyone moving together.
• Each person's personal ID number in the country you're leaving (for example a Danish CPR number, Swedish personnummer, Norwegian fødselsnummer or Finnish personal identity code).
• Any Icelandic kennitala already issued to someone in the family.
• The date of the move and your full address in Iceland, including flat number or floor, post code and town.
• Your last address abroad: country, municipality, street address and postcode.
• Email address and phone number for each person signing.
• Valid personal ID (passport, driving licence or ID card) for every person moving, to show when you hand the form in.
• Written consent from a parent who shares custody and is not moving, if that applies.

How to fill out A-257 — Notification of moving to Iceland from a Nordic country, step by step

1 Þeir sem flytja — People moving

The table has seven rows: one per person moving together — spouses or registered cohabiting partners and children under 18. For each person, give the given name(s) and middle name (Eiginnafn/nöfn og millinafn), the surname(s) (Kenninafn/nöfn), the personal ID number in the country you're leaving (Kennitala í brottflutningslandi), and the Icelandic kennitala if they already have one.

FileIt checks that each row has both a given name and a surname, that any Icelandic kennitala is valid, and that no ID number is repeated. Leave the Icelandic kennitala blank if a person doesn't have one yet.

2 Flutningur til Íslands — Moving to Iceland

Give the date of the move (Dagsetning flutnings), your address in Iceland with street, house number and flat number or floor (Heimilisfang á Íslandi), and the post code and town (Póstnúmer og staður), for example 101 Reykjavík. Remember that the notification is due within seven days of that date.

3 Heimilisfang erlendis — Address abroad

Your last address in the Nordic country you're leaving: country (Land), municipality (Sveitarfélag), street address and postcode with town. Registering your domicile in Iceland also ends your domicile registration in the country you move from.

4 Athugasemdir — Remarks

Anything Registers Iceland should know, which may also be given on a separate sheet. This is a sensible place to note custody arrangements — for example that the other parent consents to a child's move — or to point to an attached consent.

5 Dagsetning og undirskriftir — Date and signatures

There are two columns, each with email (Netfang), phone number (Símanúmer), kennitala, place (Staður), date (Dagsetning) and a space for the signature (Undirskrift). The second column is for a second adult moving, such as a spouse or partner, or a parent who is giving consent. FileIt prints the details; the signatures are written by hand.

7 Leiðbeiningar — Instructions (page 2)

The back of the form explains that a move from a Nordic country must be notified in person at Registers Iceland or at the relevant police office within seven days, that children moving must also be present, and that each person must show valid personal ID. It also notes that a Nordic resident who only needs a system ID number (kerfiskennitala) can have one applied for electronically by a public body on form A-263.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Posting or emailing the form — the move has to be notified in person, with everyone moving present.
• Missing the seven-day window after the move.
• Leaving children at home — children moving must be present too.
• Listing a child aged 18 or over — they must notify their own move.
• Forgetting the signature or written consent of a parent who shares custody but stays in the other Nordic country.
• Giving an incomplete Icelandic address without the flat number or floor, which matters in apartment buildings.
• Forgetting valid ID (passport, driving licence or ID card) for each person.

After you fill it out

Print the finished PDF from your FileIt vault and bring it, within seven days of the move, to Registers Iceland's service desk or to the local police office. Everyone moving, children included, must come along and show valid personal ID. You sign the form by hand; FileIt does not submit anything for you.

When your domicile is registered in Iceland, the registration in the Nordic country you left ends as well. If anyone in the family didn't have an Icelandic kennitala, the notification also serves as the application for one.

Keep the filled copy in your FileIt vault together with your family's ID documents, so you have a record of the date and address you registered.
