What is UDK 212 — State pension application (folkepension)?

UDK 212 is Udbetaling Danmark's paper application for Danish state pension (folkepension). You can use it to claim your pension from the month after you reach state pension age or from a later date, or to defer the pension (udskudt folkepension) while you keep working. The form also collects what Udbetaling Danmark needs to work out your first pension: your living situation, your citizenship, any years spent living or working abroad after you turned 15, which tax card to use, and the income you and a spouse or cohabitant who isn't a pensioner expect for the rest of the year.

Udbetaling Danmark asks people to apply digitally on borger.dk, which needs MitID. The pink 'Brug den digitale løsning på borger.dk' stamp on the PDF says so, although it doesn't print. The paper form is there for people who can't use the digital route. It is written in Danish, and FileIt explains each question in English with the Danish term alongside.

FileIt guides you through the form in plain English, pre-fills your name from the People in your FileIt vault, and types your answers into Udbetaling Danmark's own PDF. That includes the CPR number digit by digit, and names with letters such as ø, å, ł or ș. It checks the form's own rules, such as a CPR number that starts with a real date of birth and a deferral that doesn't also fill in the income pages. The finished PDF is saved in your vault. You print it, sign it by hand and post it yourself. FileIt never sends anything to Udbetaling Danmark.

Who needs to fill out UDK 212 — State pension application (folkepension)?

  • People reaching Danish state pension age who want their folkepension paid and can't apply digitally on borger.dk with MitID.
  • People who want to defer their state pension because they keep working at least 750 hours a year, as an employee or self-employed.
  • People who deferred their pension earlier and now want it paid, choosing how the waiting supplement (ventetillæg) is paid.
  • Applicants who have lived or worked outside Denmark after age 15, since the form collects the countries and periods that affect the pension.
  • Married or cohabiting applicants whose spouse or partner is not a pensioner, because that person's income is part of the calculation.
  • Relatives or helpers filling in the form with an older person, who still signs it themselves.

When to use UDK 212 — State pension application (folkepension)

  • Before you reach state pension age, or soon after. The form says you get pension from the 1st of the month after you reach the age if you apply no later than the 10th of the fifth month after reaching it.
  • If you apply later than that, the form's guidance says pension can only start from the 1st of the month after you apply, with no back payment.
  • Up to half a year before you reach state pension age, if you want to defer the pension, according to the guidance.
  • When you have deferred and now want payment. The guidance stresses applying for deferral at the same time as asking for payment, or you lose the deferral for the earlier period.
  • After you have applied, whenever something changes. The form lists changes you must report, such as your living situation, your address, moving or staying abroad, and changes in wealth or income.

What you need before you start

  • Your CPR number, address and phone number.
  • Your spouse's or cohabitant's name and CPR number, if you are married or live with someone.
  • Your citizenship, and the countries if you hold dual or foreign citizenship, plus whether you have or have had refugee status.
  • The countries where you lived or worked after age 15, with the periods from date to date.
  • The date you want the pension paid from, or the month and year you want it deferred to.
  • Which tax card you want the pension paid on (main card, secondary card or tax-free card).
  • Payslips and pension statements to estimate your income for the rest of the year after you move to state pension, and your capital and share income for the whole year.
  • Any foreign pensions, and whether each is a social pension (coordinated) or a private or employer pension (not coordinated).
  • The same income figures for a spouse or cohabitant who is not a pensioner, except their work income.

How to fill out UDK 212 — State pension application (folkepension), step by step

1 Dine oplysninger (your details)

Your name, CPR number, address and phone number. The CPR number goes digit by digit into the ten boxes, six before the printed dash and four after.

The form asks you to fill in every box that applies to you. Guidance for each part is on the last pages of the PDF.

2 Samlivsforhold (living situation)

Tick whether you are single, cohabiting, married, or married but not living together, and give your spouse's or cohabitant's name and CPR number.

The guidance explains that you are normally treated as cohabiting if you share a household with someone and gain practical and financial advantages from it. That can apply even if you aren't a couple, but never with your own children, grandchildren, siblings or parents. If you or your spouse live in a care home, you are not treated as living together.

3 Statsborgerskab (citizenship)

Tick Danish or dual citizenship, and name the countries if you hold more than one. The guidance explains that you must, among other things, be a Danish citizen to get state pension, but that special rules can apply, for example to refugees and citizens of other EU countries. If you aren't a Danish citizen, write the country you are a citizen of. You also answer whether you have or have had refugee status.

4 Bopæl og arbejde i udlandet (residence and work abroad after age 15)

Say whether you have lived, and whether you have worked, in countries other than Denmark since turning 15. If so, give the countries and the periods from date to date. Each part has a single line, so use Remarks (Bemærkninger) on page 4 if you need more room.

This matters because the full state pension normally requires residence in Denmark for at least 9/10 of the time from age 15 to state pension age. Otherwise the pension is paid as a percentage, which the form calls 'procentpension'.

5 Udenlandsk pension (foreign pension)

Only for people who have lived or worked abroad. Applying for Danish social pension automatically applies for pension from the EU/EEA countries, Switzerland and convention countries you are entitled to a pension from, and Udbetaling Danmark forwards the application. You can waive that here. The form warns that doing so may affect your right to other Danish social benefits, such as the personal supplement (personligt tillæg).

6 Udbetaling af folkepension (payment of state pension)

Skip this if you only want to defer. Answer whether you want the pension paid from the 1st of the month after you reach state pension age. If not, give the later date you want it paid from.

If you have earned a waiting supplement by deferring, choose how it is paid: a lifelong supplement, a 10-year supplement, or a lump sum for the basic amount with a 10-year supplement to the pension supplement.

7 Udskyd folkepensionen (defer state pension)

Tick to defer from the 1st of the month after you reach state pension age, or give the month and year of a later start, which is always the 1st of a month. Then confirm that you have worked, or expect to work, at least 750 hours a year (about 14 hours a week), as an employee or as self-employed.

If you only defer, the form says not to fill in more. Just sign it on page 4.

8 Skattekort and Forudlønnet (tax card and prepaid salary)

Choose whether the pension is paid on your main tax card, secondary tax card or tax-free card. The pension goes into your NemKonto. Then say whether you get your salary paid in advance before you move to state pension. If you do, you get an extra month's pension in advance. Ongoing pensions such as a civil servant's pension don't count.

9 Din forventede indkomst (your expected income)

Your expected personal income before tax, from your move to state pension until the end of the year. That covers work income (wages, self-employment profit, DIS shipping income), ATP Lifelong Pension, other personal income, deductions, foreign social pensions (coordinated) and other foreign pensions (not coordinated), early retirement pay and public benefits. It also covers your capital and share income for the whole year, and income you don't pay Danish tax on.

The guidance explains that your own work income doesn't reduce the pension but is still asked for. It also says that if you are entitled to pension from 1 January, Udbetaling Danmark uses your preliminary income assessment (forskudsopgørelse) instead, so you only fill in these boxes for income not taxed in Denmark.

10 Din ægtefælles/samlevers indkomst (your spouse's or cohabitant's income)

Only if your spouse or cohabitant is not a pensioner. Give the same kinds of income for them, but not their work income. If they already receive state or disability pension, Udbetaling Danmark contacts them directly to check its information.

11 Bemærkninger, samtykke og underskrift (remarks, consent and signature)

Remarks gives you room for anything else, such as extra countries or periods abroad. By signing, you consent to Udbetaling Danmark exchanging information with other authorities, employers, banks and others when needed for your case. Date the form and sign it by hand.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying too late. Apply no later than the 10th of the fifth month after reaching state pension age, or you lose the back payment.
  • Filling in the payment and income pages when you only want to defer. The form says to just sign it.
  • Waiting to ask for payment without also applying for deferral. The guidance warns that you then lose the higher deferred pension for the earlier period.
  • Leaving out time abroad after age 15. It affects your pension percentage, and the application also covers pensions from EU/EEA countries, Switzerland and convention countries.
  • Putting a foreign pension in the wrong box. A social-type pension is 'samordnet', while a private or employer pension is 'ikke samordnet'.
  • Giving the income of a spouse who is already a pensioner, or giving a spouse's work income, which the form doesn't ask for.
  • Forgetting to sign page 4. The form reminds you on every page ('Husk at underskrive ansøgningen på side 4').

After you fill it out

Print the PDF from your FileIt vault, check each page, and date and sign page 4 by hand. Post it to Udbetaling Danmark, Kongens Vænge 8, 3400 Hillerød, the 'Send til' address on the form. If you can use MitID, Udbetaling Danmark prefers the digital application on borger.dk.

According to the guidance, Udbetaling Danmark works out how much you can get and sends a pension notice (pensionsmeddelelse) showing the basis for the calculation, or a letter explaining why you aren't entitled. They may contact you if they need more detail.

Keep the filled form in your FileIt vault. When you receive state pension you have a duty to report changes straight away: becoming single, married or cohabiting, moving, living or staying abroad, and changes in wealth or income. The form also asks you to report trips of more than two months outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
