What is 04.063 EN — Tax card and CPR number for foreign employees?

Form 04.063 EN is Skattestyrelsen's (the Danish Tax Agency's) English application for a tax card (skattekort) and a Danish personal tax number (CPR number) for non-Danish employees. Without them your Danish employer has to withhold tax at a high default rate, so most people coming to Denmark for a job fill it in before their first working day. The agency can't generate your tax card or personal tax number until 1 month before you start your job in Denmark.

The form asks about your employer and your job, your identity and citizenship, your spouse, where you stay in Denmark and your home-country address, and whether you want deductions for transport between home and work, travel expenses, union membership and an unemployment fund. It has no signature box — you send it with the attachments through the contact form on skat.dk or by post.

FileIt walks you through each question, only shows the follow-ups that apply (such as the last working day for a temporary job or your spouse's details if you are married), pre-fills your name, date of birth, email and employer from the People in your FileIt vault, and prints your answers into Skattestyrelsen's own PDF — Polish, Romanian, Lithuanian and other accented names included. The finished PDF is saved in your vault; you send it yourself.

When to use 04.063 EN — Tax card and CPR number for foreign employees

  • When you have a signed employment contract and your first working day is about a month away — the agency can't generate the tax card earlier than 1 month before you start.
  • Before your first payday, so your employer can withhold tax correctly rather than at the default rate.
  • When returning to Denmark for a new job and you need your tax card set up again.
  • If you stop working in Denmark and leave the country, the guide points to a different form, 04.069, for your tax assessment.

What you need before you start

  • A copy of your signed employment contract (or job confirmation stating your first working day and the business's CVR number if you are employed through a temp agency).
  • A photo or copy of your passport or ID card — both sides of a card — showing name, gender, nationality, expiry date and date of birth, in colour and easy to read.
  • If you are a Swedish citizen, your personal certificate (Personbevis).
  • If you are not an EU/EEA, Swiss, Icelandic or Norwegian citizen, a copy of your Danish residence and work permit.
  • If you are married, a copy of your marriage certificate and/or family certificate.
  • Your employer's name, address, CVR number, corporate form, phone number and email.
  • Your first working day, last working day if temporary, trial-period end date and average monthly pay in DKK.
  • Your tax identification number (TIN) in your home country and your home-country address.
  • Your address in Denmark, if you have one, and how often you travel home.
  • Amounts and years for any deductions you want to claim: transport, travel expenses, union and unemployment fund contributions.

How to fill out 04.063 EN — Tax card and CPR number for foreign employees, step by step

1 Employer

Your Danish employer's name and address, CVR number (the 8-digit Danish business number), corporate form such as ApS or A/S, phone number and email. The form notes that Skattestyrelsen can process your case faster if it can contact your employer.

2 Employment

Whether the job is permanent or temporary, whether there is a trial period, and whether you are employed through a temp agency. Then your first working day, your last working day (for a temporary job), the end of any trial period, and your average monthly pay in DKK.

Finally, whether you have a fixed workplace and, if it isn't at your employer's address, the workplace address. Dates print as DD/MM/YYYY as the form asks.

3 CPR no. (civil registration number)

Whether you already have a Danish CPR number, and if so whether you remember it — then write it in. Add your tax identification number (TIN) from your home country, your gender, and whether you live in Sweden.

Then your first name(s), surname, date of birth, place of birth (country and town), email and phone. Give an email if you can: Skattestyrelsen also emails you when your application has been processed.

4 Citizenship

Whether you are a citizen of an EU country, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Iceland or Norway, and which country you are a citizen of. If not, say whether you have a Danish residence and work permit and attach a copy. Also enter the number of days you expect to work in Denmark.

5 Spouse

Whether you are married. If you are, give your spouse's full name after the marriage, date of birth, place and date of marriage, whether you live together in Denmark, whether your spouse works in Denmark and whether they have a Danish CPR number (and if so, what it is). The form says there is no need to fill in the spouse details if you already have a Danish CPR number.

6 Home address in Denmark

Whether you stay in Denmark while working here, and where you spend the night: an owner-occupied home, a rented apartment, housing provided by your employer, a hotel or bed and breakfast, or something else. Then your Danish street address, postcode and town.

7 Address in home country

Whether you still have a residence in your home country, and its address. The form explains that the agency registers this address in the Danish Central Personal Register (CPR) and uses it to send you important letters.

Say how often you travel home — every day, at least every 2 weeks, at least once a month, or less often — and use the comments box to describe your housing situation or travel pattern. The form points out the comments box can't be used to ask the agency questions.

8 Deduction for transport between home and work

Whether you want to claim this deduction, and the total for each year you work in Denmark. According to the guide on page 3 of the 2025.07 edition, you can claim it when your round trip is more than 24 km (12 km each way), but not if your employer pays for your transport or you have a company car. If you don't know the amount yet, you can add it later in E-tax (TastSelv).

9 Deduction for travel expenses

Whether you want to deduct expenses for food and accommodation, and the total for each year. The guide explains the conditions: you must be away from home at least 24 hours and spend the night away, at a temporary workplace too far away to sleep at home, and your employer must not already cover the costs or pay a tax-free allowance at standard rates.

10 Union membership and unemployment fund

Whether you pay contributions to a union and/or an unemployment fund (a-kasse). Give the year and amount for up to two years of union membership — the form prints a maximum of DKK 7,000 a year on the 2025.07 edition — and up to two years of unemployment fund contributions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying too early — the tax card and personal tax number can't be generated until 1 month before your first working day.
  • Forgetting attachments: the signed employment contract, passport or ID photo, and — where relevant — residence and work permit, marriage certificate or Swedish Personbevis.
  • Sending a blurry or partial ID photo. The form asks for a colour image showing the whole document.
  • Writing the dates in the wrong order. The form uses DD/MM/YYYY.
  • Entering union contributions above DKK 7,000 for a year — that's the maximum printed on this edition.
  • Using the comments box to ask questions. The form says questions there won't be answered; use the agency's contact options instead.
  • Closing your Danish bank account when you leave. The guide warns you may then not get a refund of overpaid tax.

After you fill it out

The form has no signature. Page 3 gives two ways to submit it: by email through the English contact form at skat.dk/contact (choose 'Individuals', 'Danish tax matters', send without logging on, then 'Tax registration upon arrival to Denmark' and 'Working temporarily in Denmark (form 04.063)', and attach the form and documents), or by post to Skattestyrelsen, Nykøbingvej 76, 4990 Sakskøbing. FileIt doesn't send it for you.

When your application has been processed, your employer receives a message through Digital Post when your personal tax number is ready, and the agency says when your digital tax card is ready. If you gave an email address, you're also notified by email.

Keep the filled PDF in your FileIt vault with your contract and ID. The guide also reminds you to check your preliminary income assessment if you have income outside Denmark, to register an imported vehicle where required, and, as an EU citizen staying over 3 months, to apply for a residence document.
