What is a school withdrawal letter?
Moving house, changing schools, starting home education or moving abroad all mean telling the current school formally. Schools need a written notice with the last day of attendance and where the child is going, and fee-paying schools often need notice under the parent contract. Parents want records sent on, deposits returned and a final account.
This letter gives notice with your child's details and last day, and can note that the other parent agrees. A reason is optional. You choose the next arrangement — another school, home education, moving abroad or not yet decided — and name the new school and start date. For home education, the letter confirms you will provide a suitable education and share information if required. It asks for the educational record to go to the new school and for a copy of the latest report, lists school property you will return, records any notice under the school's terms, and requests a refund or deposit and a final statement. The school countersigns to acknowledge.

Tips before you send it
- Check your parent contract before choosing a last day; fee-paying schools often require a term's notice or fees in lieu.
- If the next arrangement isn't decided yet, ask the school how that affects attendance rules before you set a last day; in many places a child of school age must be enrolled somewhere or home educated.
- Some places require schools to notify the local authority when a child leaves for home education. Check what applies.
- Return devices, library books and uniforms on loan to avoid charges.
- Ask for a final statement of account in writing so deposits and credits are settled.

School withdrawal letter: frequently asked questions
Do I have to give a reason?
Usually not. The reason field is optional.
Will the school send my child's records to the new school?
The letter asks the school to send the educational record when the new school asks, or to you if there is none, as the law and the school's policy allow.
Can I use this to start home education?
Yes. Choose home education; the letter confirms you will provide a suitable education and share information if required. Rules on home education vary, so check what's needed where you live.
Will I get my deposit back?
That depends on your contract with the school. The letter requests any refund or deposit and a final statement, after deducting what's properly owed.
What if both parents need to agree?
You can name the other parent who agrees. In some situations schools need both parents' agreement, especially where there is a dispute.
