What is a private school enrollment contract?
A private school enrollment contract is the yearly agreement between an independent or private school and a student's parent or guardian. Schools commit staff and places for the whole year when they accept a student, so the contract is mostly about money and commitment: what tuition and fees are owed, when they are paid, and what happens if the family withdraws or the school ends enrollment.
This template records the student, grade and programme (day or boarding), the school year, annual tuition, other fees, any financial aid, and an enrollment deposit that is non-refundable or refundable until the withdrawal date. You choose a payment plan — in full, two instalments or ten monthly — with an optional late fee. It sets a withdrawal date and what is owed afterwards, mentions any tuition refund plan, and covers overdue accounts, the school handbook, the information parents must share, conduct and partnership, the school's right to suspend or end enrollment, changes to the school year and remote teaching.

Tips before you send it
- Give families the handbook before they sign — the contract confirms they have received it or have access to it.
- Choose a withdrawal date that gives families a fair chance to decide; check any consumer-law cancellation rights where you are.
- Check that a late fee and any withholding of transcripts are allowed locally before relying on them.
- Only the parent who signs is bound; if both parents are to share the fees, send each of them a copy to sign.

Private school enrollment contract: frequently asked questions
Can the parent withdraw and get a refund?
Before the withdrawal date, the parent is released from the year's tuition and fees (the deposit depends on the option you choose). After it, what remains owed depends on your choice: the full year, to the end of the current term, or the rest of the year less any amount recovered by filling the place.
Can the school end enrollment?
Yes, following its handbook procedures, for serious or repeated conduct or academic problems, serious breakdown of the relationship with the parent, unpaid amounts after written notice, or materially false application information. The withdrawal terms then apply.
What if the school has to close or teach remotely?
The school continues education as far as reasonably possible, and tuition is not reduced unless the school decides otherwise and tells families in writing.
Is a document signed electronically legally binding?
In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, an electronic signature is generally valid for an ordinary agreement like this one. FileIt keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF as evidence of who signed and when.
Is this template free?
Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in FileIt. The parent doesn't need a FileIt account to sign.
