What is a student recommendation letter?
Admissions and scholarship committees read hundreds of recommendation letters. The ones that help a student are specific: who the recommender is, how well they know the student, and a real moment that shows the student at their best. The ones that don't help are lists of adjectives that could describe anyone.
This template keeps the structure out of your way so you can concentrate on the content. It opens with your name, role and the date, addresses the committee, and says what the student is applying for and how long and in what capacity you have known them. Then come their academic strengths, their character, a specific example, an optional honest comparison with other students you have taught, your recommendation, and how to reach you. It is for teachers, tutors, coaches, music teachers, youth leaders and mentors. You sign it yourself, with an optional title box.

Using the student recommendation letter, step by step
1 Say who you are
Your name and the date are filled in. Add your role and where you work, such as "Head of Science at Oakfield High School", and an email or phone number the committee can use.
2 Name the student and the programme
Enter the student's name and exactly what they are applying for, then how you know them and for how long. Leave "Addressed to" empty if you don't have the committee's name.
3 Write the recommendation
Describe their academic strengths and their character in a few sentences each, then tell one specific story. Add a comparison with other students only if you can stand behind it, and choose how strongly you recommend them.
4 Sign and send
Check the preview and sign it yourself. Download the signed PDF to upload to an application portal, or send it to the student or the programme by email.
Tips before you send it
- Ask the student for their CV, the programme's description and what they'd like you to mention.
- Use the programme's language. A science scholarship wants curiosity and rigour, a leadership course wants initiative.
- Name real achievements with numbers or dates where you can.
- Check whether the application wants the letter uploaded by you directly. Many portals do, for confidentiality.
- Keep a copy. Students often ask again for the next application.

Student recommendation letter: frequently asked questions
How long should a student recommendation letter be?
About one page. This template fits on one page with room for a full example, which is what most committees expect.
How is this different from a character reference letter?
A character reference speaks about someone's honesty and reliability in everyday life. A student recommendation comes from a teacher, coach or mentor and focuses on academic ability, potential and how the student learns.
Can I sign it electronically?
Yes. Most schools and scholarship bodies accept a signed PDF, and FileIt adds a Certificate of Completion showing who signed and when. If a portal asks you to fill in its own form as well, do that too.
Should I let the student read it?
That's your choice. Some applications ask students to waive the right to see letters. Check the application's instructions.
Is this template free?
Yes. It is free to use with the eSignature app in FileIt.
