What is 2026 IA W-4?

The IA W-4 is Iowa's Employee Withholding Allowance Certificate. Each employee must file one with their employer so the right amount of Iowa income tax is withheld. The federal Form W-4 doesn't set Iowa withholding.

Iowa allowances are dollar amounts. On the 2026 form you claim $40 for yourself ($80 as an unmarried head of household), $20 more each for being 65 or older or blind, allowances for a spouse who doesn't work or claim their own, $40 per dependent, and allowances for itemized deductions, adjustments to income, the child and dependent care credit and the federal personal exemption for people 65 or older — most of them 3.8% of the amount involved. You can also claim exemption from withholding, including as a military spouse.

With FileIt you fill out the IA W-4 online in a guided form. FileIt pre-fills your name from the People records in your vault, works out lines 1 to 7 at the 2026 figures (including the line 3 worksheet on page 3), checks the care-credit limit, and prints everything into the Department's own PDF. If you are the employer, FileIt can also fill page 4, the Centralized Employee Registry new-hire report. FileIt never submits anything — you give the certificate to your employer, and the employer reports the hire.

How to fill out 2026 IA W-4, step by step

1 Filing status

Choose Other (including single), Head of Household, Married filing jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse. Other also covers married filing separately and married people who want to withhold as single. If you choose Married filing jointly and say your spouse also has earned income, your withholding is worked out as if you were single; choose No if you don't want that.

2 Exemption from withholding

Iowa residents may enter EXEMPT and the year if they had a right to a refund of all Iowa tax withheld last year because they had no liability, and expect the same this year. The instructions give income limits: for example, under 65 and single with total income under $9,000 (under $5,000 if someone claims you as a dependent), or $13,500 combined for other statuses; 65 or older, $24,000 single or $32,000 combined. Nonresidents may not claim it. Military spouses who qualify tick their own box and enter their state of domicile or residence.

3 Line 1 — Personal allowances

$40 for yourself, or $80 if you are unmarried and eligible for head of household, plus $20 if you are 65 or older and $20 if you are blind. If you are married and your spouse doesn't work or isn't claiming allowances on a separate W-4, add $40 for your spouse and $20 each if your spouse is 65 or older or blind. Claim $0 for the most withholding.

4 Lines 2–4 — Dependents, itemized deductions and adjustments

Line 2 is $40 for each dependent you claim on your Iowa return. Line 3 comes from the worksheet on page 3: your estimated federal itemized deductions minus the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single or married filing separately, $24,150 head of household, $32,200 joint or qualifying surviving spouse), times 3.8%, rounded to the nearest dollar. If both spouses work, each uses their share of the deductions and the single amount. Line 4 is your estimated adjustments to income times 3.8%, rounded.

5 Lines 5–8 — Care credit, federal exemption, total and extra

Line 5 is for qualifying child and dependent care expenses: up to $200 with Iowa total income under $20,000, $160 up to $34,999, $120 up to $44,999 and $40 up to $89,999; nothing at $90,000 or more. Line 6 is the federal personal exemption for those 65 or older (up to $6,000) times 3.8%, rounded. Line 7 adds lines 1 to 6. Line 8 is any extra amount to deduct each pay period, for example with more than one job or income other than wages.

6 Signature and employer box

Sign and date under penalties of perjury. If you claim exemption and your wages are expected to exceed $200 per week, the employer completes the box at the bottom and within 90 days sends a copy to the Alcohol & Tax Compliance Division, Iowa Department of Revenue, PO Box 10456, Des Moines, Iowa 50306-0456.

7 Page 4 — New-hire report

Employers doing business in Iowa must report new hires and rehires to the Centralized Employee Registry within 15 days of the start date. Online reporting at iowachildsupport.gov is the preferred method; page 4 is the fax and mail version, with the employer's FEIN, name and address, dependent health coverage, start date, and the employee's date of birth, SSN, name and address.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming the same allowances at two jobs, or both spouses claiming the same allowances.
  • Claiming the spouse allowance when your spouse works and claims their own allowances.
  • Claiming more than the care-credit table allows for your income, or claiming it with $90,000 or more of total income.
  • Forgetting to round the 3.8% lines to the nearest dollar.
  • A nonresident claiming the EXEMPT exemption, which the form doesn't allow.
  • Not filing a new IA W-4 within 10 days when your allowances decrease.

After you fill it out

Sign and date page 1 and give it to your employer, who must keep it on record. FileIt saves a copy in the person's vault folder, and you can send the PDF for e-signature if your employer accepts that.

Employers send a copy to the Iowa Department of Revenue within 90 days when an employee claims exemption with wages expected to exceed $200 per week, and report the hire to the Centralized Employee Registry within 15 days (online, or by fax or mail with page 4).

Review your IA W-4 when your situation changes. If you claimed exemption and want it again next year, file a new one by February 15.
