What is Cerfa 15776 — used-vehicle transfer certificate?

Cerfa 15776*02, the certificat de cession d'un véhicule d'occasion, is the official record of a used vehicle changing hands in France. It covers a sale, a gift, or handing a vehicle over for scrapping. Issued under articles R322-4 and R322-9 of the Code de la route, it has two identical pages. Exemplaire 1 is kept by the seller (ancien propriétaire) and Exemplaire 2 by the buyer (nouveau propriétaire). Service-public.fr calls it the mandatory document for selling your vehicle.

Each copy has three parts. The seller completes the vehicle details from the registration certificate (certificat d'immatriculation, formerly the carte grise). The seller and the buyer each complete and sign their own section. The seller then declares the sale to the ANTS within 15 days and gives the buyer the code de cession. The buyer uses the details to register the vehicle in their own name.

When to use Cerfa 15776 — used-vehicle transfer certificate

• On the day of the sale or handover, with the date and time the vehicle changes hands.
• Before the seller completes the ANTS declaration of transfer, which is due within 15 days of signing the certificate.
• When scrapping a vehicle, ticking 'céder pour destruction' and giving the VHU centre's approval number where required.
• Whenever ownership changes, even between relatives and even when no money changes hands.

What you need before you start

• The vehicle's registration certificate: registration number (A), VIN (E), date of first registration (B), make (D.1), type (D.2), national type (J.1) and commercial name (D.3).
• The document number (numéro de formule) printed on the certificate for current-format registrations, or the certificate's date (I) for old-format numbers.
• The mileage shown on the odometer on the day of the sale.
• The seller's and buyer's names, or company names and 14-digit SIRET numbers, and full addresses.
• The buyer's date and place of birth, if the buyer is a private individual.
• A certificat de situation administrative less than 15 days old, to hand to the buyer.
• For a scrapped car or van, the approval number (n° d'agrément) of the VHU centre.
• The date and exact time of the sale.

How to fill out Cerfa 15776 — used-vehicle transfer certificate, step by step

1 Le véhicule (à remplir par l'ancien propriétaire)

The seller copies the vehicle details from the registration certificate. The letters in brackets match its boxes: A, the registration number; E, the 17-character VIN; B, the date of first registration; D.1, D.2, J.1 and D.3, the make, type, national type and commercial name. Add the mileage on the odometer.

Then say whether the registration certificate is handed over. If it is, give its document number for a current-format registration such as AB-123-CD. That number is on the first part of the certificate and the form already prints its leading '20'. For an old-format number such as 123 AB 45, give the certificate's date (I) instead. If there is no certificate, tick NON and give the reason, such as loss or theft.

2 Ancien propriétaire (the seller)

Tick whether the seller is a private individual or sole trader (with sex) or a company or other legal entity. Give the name: SURNAME, any name in use and first name, or the company's registered name, with its SIRET number if it has one. Then give the full address.

Next, certify whether you are selling or giving the vehicle ('céder') or handing it over for destruction ('céder pour destruction'). Give the date and time of the sale; the ANTS declaration asks for the same date and time. Then tick the statements that apply. One confirms you handed the buyer a certificat de situation administrative less than 15 days old. Another confirms the vehicle has had no notable modification affecting its certificate of conformity or registration certificate. The third confirms it is handed to an approved VHU professional for destruction, with that centre's approval number. The form says that number is compulsory for a private car, a van or a three-wheeled moped. Finish with the place, date and signature. For a company, the signatory's name and position and the company stamp.

3 Nouveau propriétaire (the buyer)

The buyer gives the same kind of details: individual or company, sex, name or company name and SIRET, date and place of birth for an individual, and full address. The buyer then certifies acquiring the vehicle on the date and at the time given by the seller, and that they have been informed of its administrative situation. Both boxes should be ticked. They finish with the place, date and signature.

4 Je m'oppose à la réutilisation de mes données personnelles

At the foot of each copy is a box to refuse the reuse of personal data for commercial marketing. It is optional. The form doesn't say which party it applies to, so FileIt ticks it on both copies when you choose it.

5 Exemplaire 1 and Exemplaire 2

The two pages are identical except for their heading. Exemplaire 1 is for the former owner and Exemplaire 2 for the new owner. FileIt prints every answer on both pages, so both parties only need to sign each copy.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Leaving out the time of the sale. It marks the moment the vehicle changes hands and should match the ANTS declaration and the 'vendu le' note on the registration certificate.
• Copying the registration number or VIN wrongly. Check them against boxes A and E of the certificate.
• Writing the numéro de formule into the wrong cells by hand. The '20' is already printed; FileIt takes the full 11-character number and prints only the rest.
• Filling in only one copy. Each party keeps a signed copy.
• Forgetting the certificat de situation administrative, which must be less than 15 days old.
• A company leaving out its SIRET number, or a person giving a nickname instead of their name as on their ID.
• Not getting every co-holder of the registration certificate to sign when there are several.
• Missing the seller's 15-day deadline for declaring the transfer to the ANTS.

After you fill it out

Print both pages from your FileIt vault, or send the PDF for e-signature to both parties. The seller and the buyer each sign their section on both copies. The seller keeps Exemplaire 1 and gives Exemplaire 2 to the buyer. On the day of the sale the seller also crosses out the registration certificate and writes 'vendu le' with the date and time, then signs it and hands it over.

The seller must declare the transfer online to the ANTS (the 'Vendre ou donner votre véhicule' service) within 15 days of signing, and pass the resulting code de cession to the buyer. The buyer then applies for a new registration certificate in their own name. Service-public.fr also lists the other documents the seller hands over, such as a recent roadworthiness test report (contrôle technique) where one is required.
