What is Vero 5042e — tax card application for people moving to Finland?
Form 5042e is the English version of Vero's application for current or former residents of another country who come to Finland to stay for more than six months. Unlike the short-stay form 5057e, it treats you as someone settling in Finland: besides your identity, addresses and work, it asks about your spouse and children, whether you are staying permanently, whether you teach or do research, and what income you will still earn abroad after the move.
With it you can apply for an ordinary tax card, a key person tax card under Finland's special regime for foreign key employees, or a prepayment of taxes for income from which nothing is withheld. Construction and shipbuilding workers can also ask to be entered in the tax number register. If you have other income or want to claim deductions, the form tells you to fill in form 5010e as well.
FileIt guides you through the 5042e in plain English and prints the answers into Vero's official PDF, 1.2026 edition. It pre-fills your name, date of birth and employer from the People records in your vault, checks the Finnish personal identity code, splits amounts into the form's euro and cent boxes and prints dates as dd.mm.yyyy. The finished PDF goes into your vault; you sign it by hand and deliver it yourself. Vero also offers this application as an e-service in MyTax, and FileIt never submits anything on your behalf.

How to fill out Vero 5042e — tax card application for people moving to Finland, step by step
1 1 Application and tax year
Tick whether you are applying for a tax card, a key person tax card or a prepayment of taxes, and write the tax year. An ordinary tax card and a key person tax card are alternatives, so FileIt only lets you pick one of them. Below that, construction and shipbuilding workers can ask for their tax number to be entered in the tax number register.
2 2 Personal details
Give your family and given names, your Finnish personal identity code or date of birth, your country of residence, citizenship and foreign tax number, then your address abroad and your address in Finland.
The form then has room for your spouse's name and date of birth, and for two children with their dates of birth and whether you have joint or sole custody. Leave these empty if they don't apply.
3 3 Details of stay in Finland
Enter your date of arrival and, if you know it, your expected departure date, plus up to two earlier stays in Finland. Tick 'Yes' if you are staying in Finland permanently — in that case there is no departure date, and FileIt reminds you if you enter both.
4 4 Employment details
Say whether you have an A1/E101 certificate and its validity, and the period you work in Finland. Choose the type of employment relationship: leased employee, in an employment relationship, self-employed, or a leased employee on an aircraft or ship. Then the type of income (pay, trade income or other), whether it is seafarer's or athlete's/performing artist's income, and your estimated income for the tax year.
Finish with your employer's name and district of work, the Finnish provider of work if you are leased, the employer's Finnish Business ID or foreign TIN and home country, and any representative in Finland.
5 5 Working in Finland as a teacher, professor or researcher
Tick if you are working as a teacher in Finland for no more than two years, or if your Finnish income is for scientific research. These answers matter because some tax treaties treat visiting teachers and researchers differently.
6 6 Information on studies
Only if you are completing a training period in Finland that is part of your studies in your country of residence: give the institution and field of study.
7 7 Income earned abroad after moving to Finland
List up to two kinds of income you will keep earning abroad after the move, such as rent from a flat you still own or a foreign pension, with the amount. Finnish residents are generally taxed on worldwide income, so Vero takes this into account in your withholding rate.
8 8 Additional information provided by
Name the person Vero can contact about the application and their phone number, then date the form and give your own phone number. FileIt prints your name under the signature line; sign above it by hand.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 5042e for a stay of six months or less — use 5057e instead.
- Ticking both the ordinary tax card and the key person tax card.
- Forgetting to list income you will still earn abroad, which can leave too little tax withheld.
- Leaving out children's custody type when you list children.
- Giving a departure date while also ticking that you are staying permanently.
- Not filling in form 5010e when you have other income or deductions to claim.
- Posting an unsigned form, or a photocopy that the optical character reader can't read well.
After you fill it out
Print both pages, sign page 2 by hand and post the form, with form 5010e if you completed it, to the Finnish Tax Administration, P.O. Box 700, 00052 VERO. Alternatively Vero offers the same application in MyTax at vero.fi/mytax, as shown in the box at the top of the form.
When the tax card arrives, give it to your employer so tax is withheld at the right rate. Your filled PDF stays in your FileIt vault, so you can check later exactly what you reported.
Apply for a new tax card whenever your income changes noticeably, you change employer, or your family situation changes.
