What is KG 45 — Veränderungsmitteilung (Kindergeld)?

KG 45, the Veränderungsmitteilung, is the Familienkasse's form for reporting changes once you already receive Kindergeld. It is published by the Familienkasse of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency); the current edition is KG 45 - 01.25, Stand Mai 2025. Where KG 1 starts a claim, KG 45 keeps it up to date: a new address or bank account, a change in marital status, a child moving in or out, work abroad, another child-related benefit, or news about an adult child's training or job.

Reporting changes is not optional. The declaration on the form reminds you that you must tell the Familienkasse without delay (unverzüglich) about every change that matters for child benefit. Late reports can lead to Kindergeld being paid to the wrong account, or paid when it should not be and then reclaimed. The form is in German and made of separate blocks, each with its own tick box — you fill in only the blocks that apply.

FileIt explains each block of KG 45 in English with the German term alongside. You switch on only the parts that changed, and FileIt ticks the matching boxes and prints your answers onto the official German PDF, with your IBAN one character per box. Names can be pre-filled from the People records in your vault, and the finished PDF is saved there. FileIt does not send anything to the Familienkasse: you print, sign by hand and post it yourself.

How to fill out KG 45 — Veränderungsmitteilung (Kindergeld), step by step

1 Header — name, Kindergeld-Nr. and phone

At the top go the surname and first name of the person who receives Kindergeld, the Kindergeld number, and optionally a daytime phone number. The Kindergeld number is how the Familienkasse finds your file, so it is required in FileIt.

2 Meine Anschrift hat sich geändert (new address)

Give your new street and house number, postcode and town, country, and the date the new address is valid from. If you have moved abroad, the work-abroad block below may also apply, because a move abroad can change which country pays family benefits.

3 Auf folgendes Konto (new bank account)

Enter the IBAN, the BIC and the bank's name, say whether the account holder is you or someone else, and give the date the change applies from. The block covers Kindergeld and, where you get it, Kinderzuschlag. FileIt checks the IBAN's check digits and prints it one character per box.

4 Mein Familienstand hat sich geändert (marital status)

Tick your new status — married, divorced, widowed, permanently separated, in a registered civil partnership, or civil partnership dissolved — and give the date since when it applies.

5 Die Anzahl der in meinem Haushalt lebenden Kinder hat sich geändert (children in the household)

Two sub-parts. If a child moved in, give the child's name, date of birth and the date they joined your household: you are claiming Kindergeld for them, and the form says the KG 1 application and Anlage Kind are enclosed.

If a child moved out, give the child's name, date of birth, the date they left, and the name and address of the person they now live with.

6 Beschäftigung im Ausland bzw. Entsendung ins Ausland (work abroad)

Say who started work abroad — you, your spouse or registered partner, or the child's other parent (with name and date of birth) — whether it is employed or self-employed work, the employer's or business's name and address, and the start date.

7 Andere kindbezogene Leistung (another child-related benefit)

On page 2: for which child another benefit is paid, since when, the person who receives it, what kind of benefit it is, the monthly amount, and the name and address of the paying body. A typical case is a family benefit paid by another country.

8 Mein volljähriges Kind (your adult child)

For a child aged 18 or over, report school, training or studies that were started, interrupted, given up or finished, with the date — and, if finished, the qualification and subject, plus the career goal if it differs.

If the child was, is or will be working, give the job, tick minijob and/or other work with the from and until dates, the total agreed weekly hours, and the employer's name and address. The form asks for details of several jobs on a separate sheet.

9 Sonstige Veränderungen (other changes)

Anything else that matters under the Merkblatt Kindergeld. The form's examples include the child starting voluntary military service or another voluntary service, an internship, the child's pregnancy, or the child caring for their own child on parental leave. Always give the start date or the period.

10 Nachweise and Ergänzungen (evidence and remarks)

Say whether the evidence for the ticked changes is enclosed (beigefügt) or will follow (reiche ich nach). There is also space for remarks — the form's example is explaining why a change is reported late.

11 Datum and Unterschrift (date and signature)

By signing you confirm the details are complete and true, that you know changes must be reported without delay, and that you have read the Merkblatt Kindergeld. The person entitled to Kindergeld, or their legal representative, signs by hand.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out the Kindergeld number, which makes the report hard to match to your file.
  • Waiting to report: the form stresses that changes must be reported without delay.
  • Reporting a child who moved in without enclosing a KG 1 application and an Anlage Kind for them.
  • Giving a new bank account without the date it should apply from, or forgetting the account holder's name when it isn't you.
  • Forgetting the dates. The form asks for a start date or period for every change.
  • For an adult child who finished training, leaving out the qualification and subject.
  • Ticking that evidence is enclosed and then not putting it in the envelope.
  • Posting the form unsigned.

After you fill it out

Print KG 45, check the ticked blocks, and sign it by hand (or your legal representative signs). Add the evidence you said is enclosed, and for a child who has joined your household, a completed KG 1 and Anlage Kind.

Post it to your Familienkasse; its address is on your Kindergeld letters. FileIt does not send the form for you. The Familienkasse also accepts change reports through its own online services; this FileIt route produces the signed paper version.

Keep a copy in your FileIt vault next to your Kindergeld decision, so you have a record of what you reported and when. Report again whenever something else changes.

KG 45 — Veränderungsmitteilung (Kindergeld): frequently asked questions

Can I fill out KG 45 online?

Yes. FileIt guides you through KG 45 in English, block by block, and prints your answers onto the official German PDF, ticking the right boxes. Names can be pre-filled from your FileIt People records and the PDF is saved in your vault. You then print, sign and post it yourself.

Where do I send the Veränderungsmitteilung?

To the Familienkasse that pays your Kindergeld. Its address is on your letters, next to your Kindergeld number. FileIt does not submit the form.

What is the difference between KG 1 and KG 45?

KG 1 is the application that starts a Kindergeld claim. KG 45 reports changes once you already receive Kindergeld. If a new child joins your household, you use both: KG 45 reports the change and a KG 1 with an Anlage Kind claims for the child.

How quickly must I report a change?

Straight away. The declaration you sign says you know you must report every change that matters for Kindergeld without delay (unverzüglich). If a report is late, the form gives space to explain why.

Do I report a new bank account on KG 45?

Yes. Use the bank account block: IBAN, BIC, bank, account holder and the date the new account should be used from. It also covers Kinderzuschlag if you receive it.

My child is over 18 and has finished school. What do I report?

Use the adult-child block: tick training or studies, choose finished (beendet) with the date, and give the qualification. If the child starts working, add the job, the dates, the weekly hours and the employer.

Is there an English version of KG 45?

The form is German and the German version is the one you send. FileIt explains every question in English with the German wording alongside.

Do I have to fill in every block?

No. Fill in only the blocks for the changes you are reporting. In FileIt, each block is a part you switch on, and only those parts are ticked and printed.
