What is E 4 (2025) — Mehrkindzuschlag?

The Mehrkindzuschlag is an Austrian tax supplement for families who received family allowance (Familienbeihilfe) for at least three children. It is paid for the third and each further child, and only if the (family) taxable income stayed at or below €55,000. The form covered here is E 4-PDF-2025 (Version vom 21.05.2025) from the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF), which asks about your circumstances in 2025.

Normally you don't need the E 4. The supplement is claimed in your annual employee tax assessment (L 1) or income tax return (E 1 or E 7). The E 4 is the stand-alone route for people with no assessment: for example a parent with no taxable income in 2025, or one whose income is not assessed.

FileIt walks you through the German form in English and prints your answers into the BMF's own PDF, including your name and date of birth from your People records. It saves the finished form in your vault. You print it, sign it by hand and post it to the Finanzamt yourself. FileIt never sends anything to the tax office.

How to fill out E 4 (2025) — Mehrkindzuschlag, step by step

1 Tax office and your identity

Tick the tax office you send the form to. Almost everyone uses Finanzamt Österreich, Postfach 260, 1000 Wien.

Enter your 10-digit social security number as on your e-card, your surname and your first name. The form says these heavily framed boxes must always be filled in. Your date of birth is required if you have no social security number.

2 1. More about you

Tick your sex, then your marital status on 31 December 2025. Tick one box only. Unless you are single, give the date the status began. On this form a spouse, a cohabiting partner and a registered partner are all called 'Partner*in'.

3 2. Current home address

Street, house number, staircase, door number, town, postcode and phone. Fill in the 'Land' box only if you live outside Austria, using the country's international vehicle registration code (for example D for Germany).

4 3. Your partner

Enter your partner's name, title, social security number and date of birth. The date of birth is required when there is no social security number. If you lived in a marriage, cohabitation or registered partnership for more than 6 months, your partner's income counts towards the €55,000 limit.

5 4. Bank details

You don't need a separate refund request, because the supplement is paid out automatically unless you owe tax. Give an IBAN only if the Finanzamt doesn't have your bank details or they have changed. The BIC is needed only when the IBAN doesn't start with AT and the bank is outside SEPA. You can ask for cash payment instead, but it can only be collected in person at the post office.

6 5. Your income in 2025

Tick 5.1 if you had no taxable income. Tick 5.2 if you had taxable income but no assessment is made for it. If that income includes agriculture and forestry, tick 5.3 and give the Einheitswert of the land you farm yourself.

7 6. The claim

Tick the box to claim the supplement. The printed wording is: you claim it for 2026 because family allowance was received for at least 3 children at least for part of 2025 and the household income did not exceed €55,000.

8 7. Partner's waiver

Only if your partner gives up the supplement in your favour. They tick 7.1, add the date and sign in the box beside it.

9 Declaration and signature

Add your tax representative, if you have one, and the date, then sign by hand on the line. By signing you confirm that the information is correct and complete, and that incorrect or incomplete information is punishable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the E 4 when an L 1, E 1 or E 7 assessment is made for you. The supplement then belongs in that return.
  • Leaving the social security number or name boxes empty. The form says the heavily framed boxes must always be filled in.
  • Forgetting that a partner's income counts towards the €55,000 limit after more than 6 months together.
  • Both parents claiming. Only one can, and the other has to waive it in writing in part 7.
  • Filling in the IBAN when the Finanzamt already has your current bank details. It isn't needed then.
  • Forgetting to sign. The applicant signs, and so does a waiving partner.

After you fill it out

Print the form, sign it by hand beside the date and, if a partner waives the supplement, have them sign part 7.

Post it to the tax office you ticked at the top. FileIt doesn't send it for you.

The supplement is paid out automatically, unless you owe tax, to the bank account the Finanzamt holds for you, or in cash at the post office if you asked for that.

FileIt keeps the finished PDF in your vault, under the person you filled it for.

E 4 (2025) — Mehrkindzuschlag: frequently asked questions

What is the Mehrkindzuschlag?

An Austrian supplement for families who received family allowance for at least three children. It is paid for the third and each further child, as long as the (family) taxable income did not exceed €55,000.

Do I need the E 4 if I file an L 1 or E 1?

No. The form's notes say the supplement is normally claimed in the (employee) tax assessment on L 1, E 1 or E 7. The E 4 is for when no assessment is made for you.

How is the €55,000 limit worked out?

On taxable income. For employment income, the notes say to take box 245 of the pay slip (Lohnzettel) less the deductible work expenses, special expenses and extraordinary burdens. If you lived with a partner for more than 6 months, their income counts too.

Can both parents claim?

No. Normally the person who receives the family allowance claims. When both parents receive it for the children in the household, one of them can claim if the other consents by waiving it in writing in part 7.

Why does the 2025 form say 'for 2026'?

That is the form's own wording: it claims the supplement for 2026 on the basis that family allowance was received and the income limit was met in 2025.

Can I fill in the E 4 in English?

The form itself is in German. FileIt explains each question in English and prints your answers into the official BMF PDF.

Does FileIt send the form to the Finanzamt?

No. FileIt fills the official PDF and saves it in your vault. You sign it and post it yourself.
