What is the shared fence agreement form template?
Fences are one of the most common reasons neighbours fall out, and it's rarely about the fence itself. It's the memory of who agreed to pay what, which side the posts were meant to face, or whose job it was to fix the gate. Two neighbours who get along today can avoid a lot of awkwardness later by writing down what they agreed while they still agree on it.
This template is filled in together and signed by both of you. The first page names both neighbours with their addresses, then describes "The work" — a new fence, a replacement or a repair — and the "Fence type", height and length. "Where the fence will run" asks you to describe the line in words, survey markers included, and there's a question about whether the boundary has been surveyed. "Finished side faces" settles the question of the good side.
The second page is the money and the upkeep. Enter the "Total agreed cost" and choose "How the cost is split". A 50/50 split needs nothing more. Choose "Unequal split" and the form asks for each neighbour's percentage; choose "One neighbour pays all" and it asks who. The contractor, a quote, the start date, permits or HOA approval, and "Who looks after it afterwards?" round it out. Both neighbours sign on screen, and the signed agreement is filed as a PDF in your FileIt vault.

The shared fence agreement form, page by page
1 Neighbours & fence
Neighbour A's name, email, phone and address, and Neighbour B's full name, phone and address. "The work" says whether it's a new, replacement or repaired fence, and "Fence type" offers wood, vinyl, chain link, metal or wrought iron, brick or block, or other. "Height (feet)" is required and accepts half feet; length is optional. "Where the fence will run" is a required description. "Has the boundary been surveyed or marked?" and "Finished side faces" — Neighbour A, Neighbour B, or alternating — finish the page.
2 Cost, work & upkeep
"Total agreed cost", then the split. Unequal opens "Neighbour A pays (%)" and "Neighbour B pays (%)"; one neighbour paying everything asks "Who pays?". The contractor, planned start and a quote upload follow, along with "Who arranges any permit or HOA approval?". "Who looks after it afterwards?" can be shared equally, in the same shares as the cost, or each neighbour maintaining their own side. A box for anything else agreed, the agreement checkbox, two signatures and the date signed complete it.

Tips for a better shared fence agreement form
- Agree the line before talking about money — that's where most disputes start
- Check any HOA rules or local permit requirements for height and materials
- Get the quote in writing and attach it so the cost is clear
- Make sure both neighbours keep a copy of the signed PDF
- Mention the agreement to a buyer if either of you sells the house
Every response becomes a PDF in your vault
The signed agreement is saved as a PDF in your FileIt vault, with the contractor quote attached. The email you gave for Neighbour A receives a copy — forward it to Neighbour B so you both have the same record.
If the fence needs work years later, the agreement is easy to find in the vault, along with who pays and who maintains each part.
- Start from this template. It opens in the FileIt Forms designer — change any question, add pages, set the rules for when questions appear.
- Share it. Turn on a public link, or send it to people by email, each with their own link. They don’t need a FileIt account.
- Get the answers as PDFs. Each response is saved as a PDF in the vault folder you choose, with uploaded files attached — and listed in a Responses table you can export to CSV.
Shared fence agreement form: frequently asked questions
Is the shared fence agreement template free?
Yes. It's a starter template in FileIt's Forms app, on every plan including free.
Is this a legally binding contract?
It's a written record of what you both agreed. Whether it's binding, and what boundary rules apply, depends on where you live, so get advice if that matters to you.
Can we split the cost unevenly?
Yes. Choose "Unequal split" and enter each neighbour's percentage.
Do both neighbours need to be there?
It's easiest on one device with both of you present, because both signatures are required before it can be submitted.
Can I attach the contractor's quote?
Yes, up to two files.
