What is a solar panel installation agreement?
Rooftop solar is a big purchase that depends on things neither side fully controls: the condition of the roof, the utility's approval to connect, incentive rules and the weather. A solar panel installation agreement keeps the installer's promises clear and keeps estimates labelled as estimates, which protects the installer and gives the owner realistic expectations.
This template covers the system size, the panels, inverter and optional battery, where the panels go, and what's included, from design to commissioning and showing the owner how to shut the system down. It sets a roof check with a stop-and-report process, the owner's confirmation that it owns the property, and the installer's job to handle permits, inspections and the grid connection application. The price is paid in stages, with a note that financing is separate. Incentives are listed without promising them, and the first-year production figure comes with a clear explanation of what affects it. Workmanship, roof-leak and manufacturer warranties are set out separately, along with cancellation rights and what happens if the utility refuses connection.

Using the solar panel installation agreement, step by step
1 Describe the system
Enter the system size, list the panels, inverter and mounting, add any battery, and say where the panels go. Add a first-year production estimate if you give one.
2 Set price and stages
Enter the total price before incentives and edit the pre-filled three-stage payment schedule.
3 List incentives carefully
Name the tax credits, rebates or export payments the owner might apply for. The contract makes clear they aren't guaranteed.
4 Dates, warranties and send
Set the estimated installation date, the workmanship and roof-leak warranty years, and the governing law, then send to the owner.
Tips before you send it
- Talk to the owner about the roof's age before signing. Taking panels off and putting them back for a re-roof later costs real money.
- Many places have specific rules for solar sales, such as cooling-off periods, licensing and required disclosures. Check them before you send.
- Keep production estimates conservative and show how you got them. The template treats them as estimates, not promises.
- Register equipment warranties for the owner where the manufacturer allows it, and hand over the paperwork at commissioning.

Solar panel installation agreement: frequently asked questions
Does the installer guarantee the energy production or savings?
No. Production and savings figures are estimates based on the design, typical weather and shading at the survey. The template explains what can change actual output and that savings depend on usage and electricity prices.
What if the roof isn't strong enough?
The installer stops, tells the owner and recommends what is needed before continuing. Roof repairs and electrical panel upgrades are priced separately unless agreed in writing.
What happens if the utility won't connect the system?
If the refusal isn't caused by the owner, either party can end the agreement, and the installer refunds what has been paid less its reasonable costs to date.
Does this cover solar loans or leases?
No. This is a cash purchase agreement. A loan or lease is a separate agreement with the finance provider.
Can it be signed electronically?
Yes. E-signatures are generally valid for home improvement contracts in the US, UK, EU and Canada, though some places add specific notice rules. Utility forms may need their own signatures. FileIt keeps an audit trail with the signed PDF.
