What is a clinical supervision agreement?
Licensing bodies expect supervisors and supervisees to agree the terms of supervision at the start, and many supervisees discover too late that their hours were logged the wrong way or that a supervisor who left never signed the forms. A written agreement prevents both problems.
This agreement records the supervisor and their licence, the supervisee and their current registration, the licence they are working toward and the licensing body. It sets how often sessions happen, whether they are individual or group, and in person or by secure video. It covers what the supervisee brings for case review, client consent to recordings, following clinical direction and practising within competence. The supervisee keeps the hours log and the supervisor signs only for hours that were actually supervised. It also covers who pays fees and the fee per session, cancellation notice, confidentiality and its limits, written evaluations, contact between sessions, professional boundaries, and ending supervision with a final evaluation and verified hours.

Tips before you send it
- Check the licensing body's current rules on supervision ratios, video supervision and supervisor qualifications before you start.
- Sign the hours log at regular sessions rather than leaving it to the end.
- Give the supervisee a copy of each signed log and evaluation.

Clinical supervision agreement: frequently asked questions
Do the licensing body's rules override this agreement?
Yes. The agreement says both parties follow the licensing body's rules and their code of ethics, and where those differ from the agreement, the licensing body's rules apply.
What happens to the hours if supervision ends early?
The supervisor completes a final evaluation and verifies all supervised hours up to the last session, so the supervisee can continue with another supervisor.
Is everything in supervision confidential?
Mostly, with limits: serious risk of harm, mandatory reporting of abuse or neglect, legal requirements, and the licensing body in connection with licensure or a serious ethical concern.
Can the supervisor also be the supervisee's therapist?
No. The agreement rules out providing therapy and other relationships that could impair the supervisor's objectivity.
