What is V0800 — Kindererziehungszeiten?

Raising children can count towards a German pension. According to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung's explanatory notes (V0810), child-raising periods (Kindererziehungszeiten) are credited as compulsory contribution periods without you paying contributions — the federal government pays them: up to 36 calendar months after the month of birth for children born from 1 January 1992, and up to 30 months for children born before. Raising a child up to its 10th birthday can also count as a care-credit period (Berücksichtigungszeit).

Form V0800 is the application to have these periods recorded. It asks about you, up to two children, where you lived while raising them, other pension schemes you belonged to, self-employment, periods abroad, your residence status, and — for your own or adopted children — whether you raised them alone or together with the other parent. For the same period, the periods can only be credited to one parent; when both raised the child, they go to the parent who mainly did so, and the other parent confirms on the form.

FileIt explains every question in English with the German wording alongside, prints your answers onto the official PDF — including names with Polish or Romanian letters — and saves it in your vault. You sign it by hand and post it. The DRV also accepts the application online.

How to fill out V0800 — Kindererziehungszeiten, step by step

1 1 · Angaben zur Person

Your insurance number, names, date and place of birth, nationality, address and phone, your last address in Germany if you live abroad, and whether and when you moved to Germany.

2 2 · Angaben zu den Kindern

For each child: name, name prefix, place and country of birth, date of birth and death, whether it is a stepchild or foster child (a V0805 is then needed), and whether you raised it without a break from birth — if not, from when until when.

3 3–4 · Wohnsitz and Versorgung

Whether you lived in the former GDR or the new federal states during those periods, whether you belonged to a civil-service or church pension scheme (with dates, type of work and the pension body), and whether you drew an old-age pension from such a scheme.

4 5 · Selbständige Tätigkeit

Self-employment, farming or working in the business of a spouse, partner or relative: the dates, the type of work, average monthly earnings and weekly hours, and for farms whether the farm was registered with the Landwirtschaftliche Alterskasse.

5 6 · Erziehung außerhalb Deutschlands

Raising a child abroad: the dates and country, whether compulsory German contributions were paid for work abroad, links to a German employer, and work or insurance periods in the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the UK.

6 7–10 · Status and exceptions

Recognition as an asylum holder, refugee or expellee, your nationality and residence status during the child-raising in Germany, and exceptions such as working for an international organisation, foreign forces, an embassy, a foreign employer, or under an exemption agreement.

7 11–12 · Who raised the children

Whether you raised the children together, alone, or with interruptions, whether the other parent mainly raised them, the other parent's details and confirmation (or why it follows later or can't be given), and whether the parents made a joint declaration assigning the periods (V0820).

8 13–14 · Documents and declaration

Optionally ask for documents in an accessible format, then sign the declaration with place and date. Section 15 is for the office that certifies your documents.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming periods that are already credited to the other parent without a joint declaration or explanation.
  • Forgetting the V0805 for a stepchild or foster child, or for a father's application for his own children.
  • Leaving out the other parent's confirmation when you raised the children together.
  • Not enclosing birth certificates when the civil-status details aren't confirmed on the form.
  • Listing more than two children on one form — use a second V0800.
  • Forgetting to sign on page 10.

After you fill it out

Print the form, have the other parent sign section 11.3 if needed, and sign it yourself on page 10.

Enclose birth certificates and any other evidence, plus V0805 forms where the form asks for them, and post everything to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung.

The DRV records the periods and sends you a decision or updated insurance record. Keep it with the application in your FileIt vault.

V0800 — Kindererziehungszeiten: frequently asked questions

How many months of child-raising are credited?

According to the DRV's notes on this form (V0810), up to 36 calendar months after the month of birth for children born from 1 January 1992, and up to 30 months for children born before. Raising a child up to its 10th birthday can also count as a care-credit period.

Can both parents get the periods?

Not for the same months. They go to the parent who mainly raised the child. Parents can decide who gets them with a joint declaration on form V0820, generally only for the future or up to two months back.

Can I fill out V0800 online?

Yes. FileIt guides you through V0800 in English and fills the official PDF, which you print, sign and post. The DRV also accepts the application electronically.

I have three children. What do I do?

The form has room for two. Fill in a second V0800 for the others.

When do I need form V0805?

For every stepchild or foster child, when you raised a child with interruptions or partly alone, and when a father, registered partner or same-sex spouse applies for their own or adopted children.

What is the difference between V0800 and V0100?

V0100 asks for your whole pension account to be clarified. V0800 deals only with child-raising periods and is often enclosed with V0100.
