What is Voluntary OASI/DI membership form?

When you leave Switzerland you usually drop out of the compulsory old-age, survivors' and disability insurance (OASI/DI, known as AHV/IV in German and AVS/AI in French). Swiss, EU and EFTA nationals who move to a country outside the EU or EFTA can instead join the voluntary OASI/DI run by the Swiss Compensation Office (SCO) in Geneva. The ZAS lists the benefits as avoiding gaps in contributions, coverage of DI rehabilitation measures and a higher OASI/DI pension.

According to the ZAS, you qualify if you are a Swiss, EU or EFTA national, live outside the EU or EFTA, were insured in the compulsory OASI/DI for at least 5 consecutive and uninterrupted years when you left it, and apply no later than 12 months after leaving it. Membership is individual: each family member sends their own form.

Who needs to fill out Voluntary OASI/DI membership form?

  • Swiss citizens moving to a country outside the EU or EFTA who want to keep building their Swiss AHV/IV pension.
  • EU and EFTA nationals leaving Switzerland for a country outside the EU or EFTA who meet the same conditions.
  • Students studying abroad outside the EU or EFTA (they fill in the Student block and enclose a study certificate).
  • Children leaving Switzerland with their parents: the form warns that minors who haven't applied within 12 months of moving abroad can't join retroactively once they come of age.
  • Each spouse separately: spouses and children are not covered automatically.

  • When you leave Switzerland to live outside the EU or EFTA.
  • No later than 12 months after leaving the compulsory OASI/DI, as the ZAS requires.

What you need before you start

  • Your 13-digit OASI (AHV/AVS) number starting with 756, and your spouse's if they have one.
  • Your nationality details: the date of Swiss citizenship, or your EU/EFTA nationality.
  • Your home address abroad and the date you started living abroad.
  • The date your compulsory OASI/DI ended, and your addresses and employers in Switzerland over the past 5 years with dates.
  • Copies to enclose: your passport, a proof of residence abroad, the residence certificate, your last salary certificate (employees) or the compensation office's final decision (self-employed), and a study certificate for students.
  • The ZAS also mentions a certificate of departure from your commune and registering with the Swiss consular representation where you live.

How to fill out Voluntary OASI/DI membership form, step by step

1 Personal details

Your OASI number, date of birth, forenames and surnames, marital status, nationality (Swiss citizenship since a date, and/or an EU/EFTA nationality), the language you want for decisions (German, French or Italian) and for correspondence (also English or Spanish), and an e-mail address if you agree to receive correspondence by e-mail.

2 Home address abroad

Country, province, postcode, town or city, street or P.O. box, and a c/o name if your mail goes to someone else.

3 Professional situation abroad

Whether you are gainfully employed and since when you have been living abroad.

4 Student

Only for students: the institution's name and the start and end of your studies, with a study certificate.

5 Situation before departure from Switzerland

The date your compulsory OASI/DI ended, up to five home addresses in Switzerland over the past 5 years, and up to five employers with dates.

6 Spouse

Your spouse's OASI number, date of birth, names, nationality and whether they are employed, not employed or a student abroad. This does not enrol your spouse: they need their own form.

7 Place, date and signature

Sign by hand. A minor's form is only valid with the consent and signature of their legal representative.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting more than 12 months after leaving the compulsory OASI/DI.
  • Assuming your spouse or children are covered by your form. Each person applies separately.
  • Forgetting the enclosures: passport copy, proof of residence abroad, residence certificate and salary certificate or final decision.
  • Mistyping the OASI number. FileIt checks the check digit.

Can I join if I move to an EU country?
