What is a pet transport agreement?
Moving a pet across the country or abroad involves more than a ride. A good transporter needs to know the pet's health, medication and temperament, who supplies the crate, which papers the route requires and who pays when a border or airline refuses them, and what to do if the pet falls ill on the road and the owner can't be reached. A pet transport agreement puts those answers in writing.
This template records the pet, health and behaviour notes, the owner's vet, the crate, whether the pet travels by road, by air or both, collection and delivery addresses and dates, optional route, stops and feeding notes, and the health papers needed with a date to supply them. It sets the transporter's care standard, airline conditions, delays, an emergency vet spending limit and a backup contact, the price with what is and isn't included, deposit, balance and cancellation, and clear limits on responsibility for travel stress and existing conditions.

2 Plan the trip
Choose road, air or both, enter collection and delivery addresses, the collection date and expected delivery, and add route, stops and feeding notes if you want them in writing.
3 List the papers
Enter the health certificates and permits the route needs and the date the owner provides them. Check current airline and destination rules for every move.
4 Price it and send
Enter the price, what it includes and excludes, deposit, balance timing, the emergency vet limit and the free cancellation period, then send it to the owner to sign.
Tips before you send it
- Paper requirements change and vary by route, airline and destination. Check them for each move rather than reusing an old list.
- Ask for a backup contact. The emergency vet terms work best when you can reach someone quickly.
- Set a realistic emergency vet limit. The agreement also lets you go above it if a vet says it is needed to save the pet's life.
- Many places require businesses carrying animals for payment to be registered or licensed. Add your number if you have one.

Pet transport agreement: frequently asked questions
Who is responsible for health certificates and permits?
The owner, unless the transporter has agreed in writing to arrange them. Costs caused by missing or incorrect papers from the owner, such as quarantine or a return trip, are paid by the owner.
What happens if the pet gets sick during the trip?
The transporter tries the owner, then the backup contact. If neither answers, it can take the pet to a vet and approve emergency treatment up to the limit you set, or more if a vet says it is needed to save the pet's life.
Is the transporter responsible while the pet is on a plane?
No. Where the pet flies, the airline carries it under its own conditions. The transporter is responsible for the parts of the trip in its own care.
Can the owner cancel?
Yes. Cancelling at least the number of days you set before collection gets a refund, less costs already paid to others that can't be recovered. Later cancellations may lose the deposit.
Can it be signed electronically?
Yes. E-signatures are generally valid for service agreements like this in the US, UK, EU and Canada. FileIt keeps an audit trail with the signed PDF.
