What is a cooking class waiver?
Cooking classes are fun because participants actually cook, which means real knives, real heat and real allergens. A short waiver signed at booking tells participants what to expect, gathers the allergy and health information your instructors need, and records that everyone agreed to the kitchen rules.
This waiver records the school, class or course, date and location, and the participant, with a parent or guardian section for under-18s. It lists the main risks, from cuts and burns to slips, equipment, allergic reactions and food-borne illness, and sets out kitchen safety rules on hand washing, knife handling, clothing and reporting injuries. You choose whether alcohol is served to adults, used in cooking only, or not used. It records the participant's allergies, health conditions and emergency contact, and the photo choice they made. The participant accepts that the shared kitchen cannot be allergen-free, consents to first aid, and releases the school to the extent the law allows, except for negligence or misconduct.

Using the cooking class waiver, step by step
1 The class
Your school name fills in from your account. Add the location, class or course name and date, and choose whether alcohol is served, used in cooking, or not used.
2 The participant
Add the participant's name and age. For under-18s, add the parent or guardian, who signs on their behalf.
3 Allergies and health
Enter the allergies, health conditions and emergency contact the participant gave you, and their photo choice. If the allergy box is left empty, the form says the participant has none to declare, so check before sending.
4 Sign at booking
Send the waiver with the booking confirmation. The participant signs online before arriving and you countersign; it is filed in your FileIt vault.
Tips before you send it
- Read the allergy list before every class, not just at booking.
- Waivers for minors are limited or not recognised in some places; check local law.
- Keep a stocked first aid kit and burns dressings in the teaching kitchen.
- Pair it with the food allergy acknowledgement for guests who are not cooking.
Sign it online in minutes
- Fill in the blanks. Names, dates and amounts go straight into the agreement — the preview shows exactly where.
- Name who signs. Tick “This is me” for your own part. FileIt builds the PDF with every signature, date box on the right line, and you can check or move anything before sending.
- Send it. Each signer gets a secure link and signs from any device — no account needed. The signed PDF, with an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion, is filed in your vault and emailed to everyone.
Cooking class waiver: frequently asked questions
Does the waiver cover the school's own negligence?
No. The release applies to the extent the law allows and excludes negligence, gross negligence and wilful misconduct.
Can a parent sign for a child?
Yes. Choose 'under 18' and add the parent or guardian, who gives permission and signs on the child's behalf. Some places limit waivers for minors.
What if alcohol is part of the class?
Choose whether it is served to adult participants or used in cooking only, and the matching paragraph appears. The served option covers ID checks, responsible drinking and not driving.
Can participants opt out of photos?
Yes. They can allow photos, allow photos of the food only, or refuse photos of themselves, and change their choice later in writing.
