What is a cSA share agreement?

In community supported agriculture, members pay up front and the farm uses that money to plant for them. It works because both sides accept that a wet spring or a pest outbreak means smaller boxes. A written CSA agreement makes that shared risk clear before anyone pays, and settles the everyday questions: what is in a share, where and when to collect it, and what happens to a box nobody picks up.

This template records the share size and a typical share, any add-ons, the expected first and last pickups and number of weeks, and the pickup place and time. You choose a hold policy, set the season price and payment plan, and add an optional work share for members who swap hours on the farm for a discount. It explains that no refund is due for a smaller harvest, what the farm does if it cannot deliver for much of the season, the full-refund cancellation date, and that members may transfer a share they can no longer use.

Tips before you send it

  • Show new members photos of early, mid and late season boxes. It sets expectations better than any wording.
  • Send a reminder the day before pickup. Uncollected shares are forfeited under the template, so reminders keep members happy.
  • Keep the work share tasks simple and safe. The template rules out heavy machinery and chemicals for work-share members.
  • Tell members about crop problems as they happen. The shared-risk clause works best when the farm is open about it.

CSA share agreement: frequently asked questions

Does a poor harvest mean a refund?

No. Members share the risk, so smaller or different shares don't trigger a refund. If the farm can't provide shares for a substantial part of the season, it refunds the unused part as far as its funds allow, or offers a credit.

What happens to a share nobody collects?

It's forfeited and may be donated, unless it was on an agreed hold. If the farm misses a pickup, it makes up the share or refunds that week.

Can a member cancel?

Yes, for a full refund before the date you set. After that, payments aren't refundable, but the member can transfer the rest of the season to someone else.

How does the work share work?

If you fill it in, the member works the agreed hours for a discount. Hours missed are paid back or made up later by agreement.

Is the template free?

Yes. It's free with FileIt eSignature, and members sign from the email link without an account.
