What is NSSF voluntary top-up?

Employees in Kenya pay a mandatory contribution to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) through their employer. If you want to save more for retirement through NSSF, the Voluntary Top-up of NSSF Contributions form (SF/R&C/COMP/DF/001) authorises your employer to deduct an extra voluntary amount from your salary every month, on top of the mandatory contribution, and pay it into your NSSF account. The same form increases or reduces a voluntary deduction you already have.

The form asks for your name, NSSF number, ID number, payroll number and phone, your employer's name and NSSF registration number, the current and new monthly amounts in Kenya shillings (the new one also in words), and the month and year the change starts. It states that the authority is a binding agreement between you and NSSF, and that the contributions accrue on your account until you qualify for the relevant benefit under the NSSF Act No. 45 of 2013.

FileIt fills NSSF's own PDF: it repeats your name in the authority, writes the new amount out in words, and checks the dates. The filled form is saved in your FileIt vault. You print it, sign it by hand and hand it in yourself. FileIt never submits anything.

How to fill out NSSF voluntary top-up, step by step

1 Branch

The top of the form has a blank before 'BRANCH' for the NSSF branch the form is for.

2 Member and employer details

Name of member, NSSF number, ID number, employment P/No (your payroll or staff number), telephone number, employer name and the employer's NSSF registration number.

3 Authority

'I ... do hereby authorize my Employer to increase/reduce my Voluntary deductions from Kshs ... to Kshs ... in words ... from my salary every month in addition to my current mandatory contribution and remit the same to my NSSF Account with effect from ... month ... year.' FileIt fills your name, both amounts, the new amount in words, and the start month and year.

4 Signature and date

The form states that the authority is a binding agreement between you and NSSF, and that the contributions accrue on your account until you qualify for the relevant benefit under the NSSF Act No. 45 of 2013. Sign by hand and date it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering your total deduction (mandatory plus voluntary) instead of only the voluntary amount. The voluntary deduction is in addition to the mandatory contribution.
  • Leaving out your NSSF number or your employer's NSSF registration number, so the money can't be matched to your account.
  • A start month that has already passed by the time payroll gets the form.
  • Not making the three copies the form asks for, or not keeping one yourself.

After you fill it out

Print the filled form from your FileIt vault. The form asks for it in triplicate, so print three copies and sign each by hand.

Hand the copies in as NSSF or your employer directs, and keep one for your records.

Check your payslip and NSSF statement after the start month to confirm the voluntary amount is being deducted and credited.

NSSF voluntary top-up: frequently asked questions

What is a voluntary top-up of NSSF contributions?

It's an extra amount you choose to have deducted from your salary every month, in addition to your mandatory NSSF contribution, and paid into your NSSF account.

Can I use the form to reduce or stop my voluntary deduction?

The form authorises your employer to 'increase/reduce' your voluntary deductions from one amount to another. FileIt asks for the current and the new amount; a new amount of 0 shillings means no voluntary deduction.

Why does it ask for the amount in words?

The form has an 'in words' space for the new amount. FileIt writes it out from the figure you enter, for example 2,750 becomes 'Two thousand seven hundred and fifty'.

Can I sign it electronically?

FileIt doesn't set it up for e-signature. The form asks for three copies with your signature, so print it and sign by hand.

Does FileIt send the form to NSSF or my employer?

No. FileIt fills in NSSF's own PDF and saves it in your vault. You print, sign and hand it in yourself.
