What is U-101 — Power of attorney to collect a passport, ID card or certificate?
Form U-101, 'Umboð til að sækja gögn/skilríki til Þjóðskrár Íslands', is Registers Iceland's (Þjóðskrá Íslands) power of attorney for collecting documents. With it you authorise another person to pick up your passport (vegabréf), ID card (nafnskírteini) or a certificate (vottorð) on your behalf. A guardian can use the same form for a child's document.
The form is in Icelandic and fits on one page: your name and kennitala, the name and kennitala of the person you authorise, ticks for what they may collect, the child's name and kennitala if the document is a child's, your signature and the date, and two witnesses. The form says the grantor's signature must be confirmed by two witnesses, and the person collecting must identify themselves with valid ID when they hand the authorisation over.
FileIt explains each part in English, pre-fills your name from the People in your FileIt vault, checks every kennitala (check digit and date of birth), and prints the answers into Registers Iceland's own PDF, Icelandic and other accented letters included. The finished form is saved in your vault, ready to print and sign by hand in front of the witnesses.

How to fill out U-101 — Power of attorney to collect a passport, ID card or certificate, step by step
1 Ég undirrituð/undirritaður — I, the undersigned
Your name (Nafn) and kennitala. This is the person giving the authority: the document holder, or the guardian for a child's document.
2 Veiti hér með — hereby authorise
The name and kennitala of the person who will collect. The note under it says they must identify themselves with valid ID when they present the authorisation, and lists the valid Icelandic IDs: passport, Icelandic driving licence, ID card and recognised travel document.
3 Umboð til að sækja — authorised to collect
Tick Vegabréf (passport), Vottorð (certificate) and/or Nafnskírteini (ID card). FileIt asks you to tick at least one.
4 Ef umboð fyrir hönd barns — on behalf of a child
Only for a child's document: the child's name (Nafn barns) and kennitala (Kennitala barns). FileIt checks the child is under 18.
5 Undirskrift umboðsveitanda — grantor's signature
FileIt prints the date (Dagsetning) as dd.mm.yyyy. The line marked 'Nafn' is for your handwritten signature, which you add in front of the two witnesses.
6 Vottar að réttri dagsetningu og undirskrift — witnesses
Two witnesses confirm the date and your signature. Each signs on their 'Nafn' line and gives their kennitala, which FileIt can print for them. A witness without an Icelandic kennitala attaches a copy of their passport or recognised travel document.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Signing without the two witnesses. The form says the grantor's signature must be confirmed by two witnesses.
- Forgetting the copy of a passport or travel document for a witness without an Icelandic kennitala.
- Not ticking what the person may collect.
- Sending someone without valid ID; they must identify themselves when they hand over the authorisation.
- Writing the wrong kennitala. FileIt checks each one's check digit and date of birth, and that no kennitala appears twice.
- Trying to e-sign it. The authorisation is signed by hand.
After you fill it out
Print the finished PDF from your FileIt vault. Sign it by hand on the line under 'Undirskrift umboðsveitanda' in front of two witnesses, who sign on their lines and give their kennitala.
Give the signed form to the person collecting. They bring it, with their own valid ID, to Registers Iceland when they collect. FileIt does not submit anything for you.
Keep the filled copy in your FileIt vault next to the passport or ID card details, so the expiry date and the next renewal are tracked too.
