What is IHT406 bank accounts and NS&I?

When an estate needs a full Inheritance Tax account on form IHT400, the money the deceased held in banks, building societies and National Savings & Investments is listed on schedule IHT406. Each account goes on its own line with the balance at the date of death, including any interest earned up to that day.

The form has four tables: sole bank and building society accounts (including cash ISAs), National Savings accounts, Premium Bonds (with any unclaimed prizes), and other NS&I products such as savings certificates and income bonds. Joint accounts, business accounts and overdrawn accounts belong elsewhere, on IHT404, IHT413 and box 82 of IHT400.

FileIt shows just as many lines as you have accounts, adds up each table and works out the figures to copy to IHT400 boxes 52 and 54, then prints it all into HMRC's own IHT406 PDF.

How to fill out IHT406 bank accounts and NS&I, step by step

1 About the deceased

Name, date of death and Inheritance Tax reference. FileIt can pre-fill the name from the person's record in your vault.

2 Box 1: bank and building society accounts

Say how many sole accounts there are, then give each one's name, account number and balance with interest. FileIt adds them up for box 1, which you copy to IHT400 box 52.

3 Box 2: National Savings accounts

For example Investment or Direct ISA accounts, with account numbers and balances.

4 Box 3: Premium Bonds

Holder and bond numbers, the bond value (A) and any unclaimed or uncashed prizes (B). FileIt works out A + B on each line and the total.

5 Boxes 4 and 5: other NS&I and the NS&I total

Products such as savings certificates and income bonds. FileIt adds boxes 2, 3 and 4 for box 5, which goes to IHT400 box 54.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing joint accounts here. They go on IHT404, jointly owned assets.
  • Leaving out interest earned up to the date of death.
  • Forgetting Premium Bond prizes that hadn't been claimed or cashed.
  • Including overdrawn accounts. Show those as debts at box 82 of IHT400.
  • Not copying the totals to boxes 52 and 54 of IHT400.

After you fill it out

Check each balance against the banks' and NS&I's letters, then download the filled PDF.

Copy box 1 to IHT400 box 52 and box 5 to box 54, and send IHT406 with the rest of your IHT400 account. FileIt doesn't send anything to HMRC.

Keep the balance letters and a copy of the schedule in the deceased's FileIt folder.
