What is UDK 513 — Extra parental leave (ekstra orlov)?

Under the Danish leave rules for children born or received on 2 August 2022 or later, leave with maternity/parental benefit (barselsdagpenge) is shared between two parents, and part of each parent's share is earmarked for them. That works when there are two parents who can both take leave. UDK 513 is for the families where that isn't the case, so the parent applying can ask Udbetaling Danmark for extra leave (ekstra orlov).

The form lists six situations: you are a solo parent, the other parent isn't socially insured in Denmark, you have sole custody and don't live with the other parent, the other parent can't look after the child alone, the other parent has died, or the other parent can't transfer leave, for example because they are unconscious. You tick the ones that apply, give your own and the child's details, and send documentation of your situation. The letter that comes with the form explains which documents.

Udbetaling Danmark asks people to apply digitally on borger.dk with MitID, and the paper form is for when you can't. FileIt explains each question in English with the Danish wording alongside, types your answers into Udbetaling Danmark's own PDF, including names with letters such as ł, ș or ø, and saves it in your vault. You print it, sign it by hand and post it.

  • As soon as you know your situation, so Udbetaling Danmark can plan your leave. Ask them about the deadlines that apply to your case.

How to fill out UDK 513 — Extra parental leave (ekstra orlov), step by step

1 Dine oplysninger (your details)

Name, CPR number, address and phone number of the parent applying. The CPR number goes digit by digit into the ten boxes around the printed dash.

2 Barnets oplysninger (the child)

Tick Mor or Far/Medmor, then give the child's CPR number. If the child has no Danish CPR number, the form asks for the date of birth in the same boxes, and FileIt prints it as DDMMYY.

3 Fuldmagt (power of attorney)

Only if you are applying on behalf of someone else. Then give your own full name and CPR number and enclose the signed power of attorney. The form says the application can only be handled once that has arrived.

4 Din situation (your situation)

Tick each situation that applies: solo parent, other parent not socially insured in Denmark, sole custody, other parent unable to look after the child alone, other parent deceased, or other parent unable to transfer leave. Each one has a short explanation in italics on the form.

5 Bemærkninger (remarks)

Room for three lines of anything else Udbetaling Danmark should know. FileIt warns you if your text won't fit.

6 Erklæring, samtykke og underskrift (consent and signature)

Say whether you consent to Udbetaling Danmark obtaining and passing on information relevant to your case. The form says consent is voluntary, but saying no may mean they can't handle the case. Then date and sign by hand.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the form without documentation of your situation. The covering letter says what is needed.
  • Forgetting the birth certificate or other proof of parenthood.
  • Filling in the power-of-attorney part with the parent's details. It is for the person applying on their behalf.
  • Writing a CPR number for a child who doesn't have one. Use the date of birth instead.
  • Leaving the consent question unanswered, or forgetting to sign.
