What is Notice of intent to claim a deduction for personal super contributions (NAT 71121)?

If you've paid money into your super fund yourself from after-tax income and want to claim it as a tax deduction, your fund first needs a valid notice of intent from you. NAT 71121 is the ATO's format for that notice. You can also use it to vary — reduce — the amount in a notice you've already given, for example when the ATO has disallowed part of your claim.

The notice goes to your super fund, not the ATO. You give your TFN and contact details, the fund's name, ABN, your member account number and USI, the financial year, how much you contributed and how much you'll claim, then sign the declaration that matches: an original notice on page 2, or a variation on page 3. The declaration sets out when the notice has to be lodged — the earlier of lodging your tax return for that year and the end of the following income year.

FileIt fills the current NAT 71121 (edition 11.2014) in the ATO's own PDF, one character per box in block letters. It right-aligns your dollar amounts in their boxes, splits a long fund name over its two rows, prints your name and the date on the declaration that applies, and checks your TFN and the fund's ABN before you print.

  • After making personal contributions in a financial year, before you lodge your tax return for that year.
  • While you're still a member of the fund and it still holds the contributions — before it starts paying you an income stream from them.
  • To vary an earlier valid notice and reduce the amount you'll claim — a variation can't increase it.

  • The fund's name and ABN, your member account number, and the fund's USI if you know it.

How to fill out Notice of intent to claim a deduction for personal super contributions (NAT 71121), step by step

1 Section A: your details

Your TFN, title, name, date of birth, postal address and daytime phone number. Your fund can't accept the contributions this notice covers if it doesn't have your TFN.

2 Section B: your super fund

The fund's name, ABN, your member account number and the fund's Unique Superannuation Identifier if you know it.

3 Question 10: original or variation

Choose No for an original notice to claim a deduction, or Yes to vary a previous valid notice. FileIt shows only the questions that apply.

4 Questions 11–17: the amounts

For an original notice, the financial year, your personal contributions and the amount you'll claim. For a variation, the financial year, your contributions, the amount in your original notice and the reduced amount you'll now claim.

5 Section D: declaration

Your name and the date print on the declaration that matches your choice. Sign it to confirm the statements it lists are true.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the notice to the ATO — it goes to your super fund.
  • Claiming more than you actually contributed to the fund in that year.
  • Including amounts your employer paid, such as reportable employer super contributions — these aren't personal contributions.
  • Lodging after you've rolled the money out of the fund or started an income stream from it.
  • Using a variation to increase the amount — it can only reduce what you stated before.

After you fill it out

Sign the declaration — print from FileIt and sign by hand, or send the PDF for e-signature (the page 2 declaration).

Give the notice to your super fund. FileIt doesn't send it to the fund or the ATO.

Keep the fund's acknowledgement with this notice in your FileIt vault — you'll want both when you lodge your tax return.

Notice of intent to claim a deduction for personal super contributions (NAT 71121): frequently asked questions

Do I send this notice to the ATO?

No. The form says to send it to your super fund. The ATO only provides the format — it doesn't collect the notice.

When does the notice have to be given?

The declaration says you lodge it by the earlier of the day you lodge your income tax return for the year the contributions were made and the end of the following income year.

Can I change the amount later?

You can reduce it with a variation — choose Yes at question 10 and complete questions 14 to 17 and the page 3 declaration. The declaration lists the situations in which a variation can be made.

Do I have to give my TFN?

It isn't an offence not to, but the form explains that if your fund doesn't already hold your TFN it won't be permitted to accept the contributions the notice covers.

Why are my dollars spread across the boxes?

The form has six boxes for whole dollars and two for cents. FileIt right-aligns the amount so each digit sits in its own box, as the ATO asks.
