What is the farmland lease inquiry form template?

Landowners renting out farmland care about more than the rent. They want to know what the tenant will grow or graze, how they'll look after the soil, hedges and water, what machinery they have, and whether they've managed land before. Farmers, in turn, need to say how much land they need, what type, what buildings and for how long.

This farmland lease inquiry template asks both sides of that conversation. The farmer introduces themselves and how they farm now, then the land wanted: acreage and flexibility, land type, buildings and facilities, rent arrangement, term, start date and a rent figure. Farming plans cover crops or livestock (each shown only when relevant), the farming system, soil and water care, environmental schemes and machinery. The last page asks for experience, insurance, references and whether they'd like to walk the land.

Each enquiry is filed as a PDF in your FileIt vault, making it easy to compare enquiries when a block of land comes up.

The farmland lease inquiry form, page by page

1 About you

The farmer gives their name, farm or business name, contact details and address, and says whether they farm owned land, rented land, both, or are starting out. Existing farmers give their current acreage, and everyone says how far they'd travel.

2 Land wanted

The farmer names the land or listing they're asking about, the acreage wanted and how flexible they are, ticks the type of land and any buildings or facilities needed, and chooses the arrangement: cash rent, crop or livestock share, seasonal grazing licence or open to discussion. Term, earliest start and a rent figure per acre per year complete the page.

3 Farming plans

The main use decides what's asked next: crops and rotation for crop farmers, species, numbers and housing for livestock, both for mixed. The farmer describes their system, how they'd care for soil, hedges and water, any environmental scheme, and the machinery they have.

4 Experience & references

Years of experience, qualifications and a description of their farming background come first, then whether they hold farm liability insurance, a landlord reference, another reference, whether they'd like to walk the land, and consent to be contacted and have references checked.

  • Ask for a visit before discussing rent in detail
  • Check that livestock numbers suit the acreage and the water and fencing available
  • Take up at least one reference before agreeing terms
  • Use the Responses table to compare enquiries for the same block side by side
