What is a social media account transfer agreement?
When a business changes hands, its social media accounts are often among its most valuable assets, and the easiest to get wrong. A former owner who still holds the recovery email can take an account back months later. Some platforms do not allow accounts to be sold at all, only administrators to be changed. Past posts may include photos the business never had the right to pass on.
This template lists each platform, handle or page being transferred and whether the transfer is part of a business sale or a standalone deal. It deals openly with platform rules and what happens if an account cannot move. It sets a price with three payment options, and a handover checklist covering secure credential exchange, new passwords, recovery details, two-factor and removal of the seller's access. Rights in past posts, the seller's promises about bans and bought followers, and a promise not to reclaim the accounts complete it.

Using the social media account transfer agreement, step by step
1 List the accounts
Enter each platform and handle or page name, with the follower count on signing if you want a record of it. Say whether this is part of a business sale.
2 Set the price
Enter a price and choose when it is paid, or leave it empty if the accounts are already covered by a wider sale.
3 Plan the handover
Pick a handover date and decide whether rights in past posts pass to the buyer or stay with the seller under a licence.
4 Sign, then switch the logins
Both sign and initial. On the day, follow the checklist: new owner access, new passwords and recovery details, two-factor, then the seller leaves.
Tips before you send it
- Read each platform's current terms before agreeing a price. Where selling an account is not allowed, transfer page roles or business details instead.
- Never send passwords in an ordinary email or message. Use a password manager's sharing feature or change them together on a call.
- Change the recovery email and phone number immediately. They are what lets an account be taken back.
- Post a short announcement after the handover so followers know about the change of ownership.

Social media account transfer agreement: frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to sell a social media account?
It depends on the platform. Some prohibit selling accounts, while allowing business pages to change administrators or owners. The agreement requires the transfer to be done in a way each platform allows, and deals with accounts that cannot move.
What happens to old posts?
You choose: the seller's rights in them pass to the buyer, or the seller keeps them and lets the buyer leave the posts online. Rights in other people's photos or music pass only as far as the seller holds them.
Does the seller promise the followers will stay?
No. Follower counts identify the accounts only. The seller does promise it has not bought followers or engagement in the last 12 months.
What stops the seller taking the account back?
The handover moves the password, recovery details and two-factor to the buyer and removes the seller's access. The seller also promises never to try to recover or access the accounts.
