What is a contestant participation agreement?

Whether it's a cooking competition for streaming, a local talent show, a pageant or an online challenge, producers need each contestant to confirm they are eligible, accept the rules and filming, keep the results secret until broadcast, and understand what happens if they break the rules.

This agreement names the show, its format, dates and location, and points to your official rules. The contestant confirms your eligibility requirements and that their application was truthful. They agree to be filmed and for their name and image to be used in the show and its promotion, but not to endorse unrelated products without separate consent. Results and other contestants' identities stay confidential until a point you set. It covers conduct, welfare support and breaks, the prize and any expenses, disqualification and withdrawal, and that footage may still be used fairly. A parent signs for contestants under 18, and every page is initialled.

3 Prizes and secrecy

Describe any prize and expenses, and set when results stop being confidential.

4 Send to each contestant

Each contestant signs and initials every page; you countersign. Signed copies are filed together in your vault.

Tips before you send it

  • Give contestants the official rules with this agreement — it refers to them.
  • Use a separate release for anyone else who appears on camera, such as family members or audience.
  • Rules for children in filmed productions, including licences and chaperones, differ by place. Check them before casting minors.
  • Prize promotions and competitions can be regulated. Check local rules on prizes, especially for games of chance.
  • Have welfare support in place and tell contestants how to reach it.

Contestant participation agreement: frequently asked questions

Can contestants talk about the show after it airs?

Yes, about their own experience. They still may not disclose other contestants' private information or the producer's confidential business information. They can always speak to the police, a regulator, a lawyer or a doctor.

Can the show be edited?

Yes. The contestant accepts that what is shown may be shortened, re-ordered or combined, and the agreement says it should not be presented in a way that is false.

What happens if a contestant withdraws?

They may withdraw at any time but forfeit any prize. Footage filmed before that may still be used fairly.

Is the contestant paid for use of their image?

Not beyond any prize, fee or expenses you list. Use in the show and its promotion is covered without further payment; endorsing unrelated products needs separate consent.

Does it cover minors?

Yes. A parent or guardian signs for contestants under 18 and agrees to make sure a responsible adult accompanies them when the law or you require it.
