What is a blended family agreement?

When two families become one household, the hard conversations tend to happen in the middle of a row: whether a step-parent can tell a child off, whose child's school trip comes out of the joint account, why one set of children stays up later than the other. A blended family agreement lets the two adults have those conversations calmly, before or soon after moving in, and write down what they decided.

This template covers each partner's parenting role and how the step-parent's role grows, discipline and presenting a united front, how household costs are split, who pays for each child's costs and where child support goes, routines and house rules that apply to every child, how each of you deals with the children's other parents, family time and one-to-one time, and what you will do when something isn't working. It states plainly that any court order or parenting plan comes first, and that it does not decide property or money if you separate.

Using the blended family agreement, step by step

1 List the children

Name each child, their age, whose child they are and when they live with you. It helps you both picture the real week, including visiting weekends.

2 Agree roles and discipline

The defaults give each parent the lead with their own children while the step-parent backs up the house rules. Change them to suit your family, and say how you'll handle disagreements so the children never see you divided.

3 Sort out the money

Describe how rent or mortgage, food and bills are split, then who pays for each child's clothes, activities and phone, and where child support goes. Writing it down avoids quiet resentment later.

4 Routines, other parents and family time, then sign

Add bedtimes, meals and screen rules, how you each deal with former partners, and the family and couple time you'll protect. Set a review date, tick "This is me" and add your partner. The signed copy goes into your FileIt vault.

Tips before you send it

  • Talk with the children about the house rules, but keep this agreement between the two adults.
  • Let step-relationships develop at the child's pace. Warmth first, authority later.
  • Every child needs a space of their own, even if they're only with you two nights a fortnight.
  • Review it after six months. What you agree before moving in rarely survives the first term unchanged.
  • If you want to protect property or savings if you separate, that needs a separate cohabitation or prenuptial agreement and local legal advice.

Blended family agreement: frequently asked questions

Is a blended family agreement legally binding?

It isn't intended to be. It records your shared intentions as a couple. Anything about property or money on separation belongs in a living together agreement or a prenuptial agreement made with legal advice.

Does it change custody or child support arrangements?

No. The agreement says that any court order, parenting plan or child support arrangement comes first. It only covers how your household works day to day.

Should the children sign?

This one is for the two adults. For older children, a separate house rules contract that they help write can work well.

Can we change it later?

Yes. Set a review date and update it as the family settles. Sending a new version takes a few minutes in FileIt, and each signed copy stays in your vault.

Is this template free?

Yes. It is free to use with the eSignature app in FileIt.
