What is Form NJ-W-4P?

Form NJ-W-4P comes from the New Jersey Division of Taxation. Pension and annuity payers don't have to withhold New Jersey income tax unless you ask, so retirees who expect to owe New Jersey tax use this certificate to request a set dollar amount from each payment. The same form stops withholding you asked for before.

Page 2 explains when a pension is taxable in New Jersey and has a five-line worksheet: your estimated New Jersey tax for the year, less tax already paid or withheld from other sources, divided by the number of payments. The form asks for a whole dollar amount of at least $10 a payment. If you don't expect to owe New Jersey tax at the end of the year, the form says not to request withholding.

FileIt fills in your name, address, Social Security number and pension ID, does the worksheet arithmetic if you switch it on, and rounds the result up to the whole-dollar amount the form wants. Your answers print on the Division's own PDF (edition 04-17). Sign with FileIt's eSignature or by hand, then mail it to your pension or annuity payer. FileIt doesn't send it for you.

How to fill out Form NJ-W-4P, step by step

1 Your details

Name, Social Security number (printed across the form's three boxes), home address and the pension or annuity ID number.

2 Worksheet (optional)

Enter lines 1, 2 and 4. FileIt works out line 3 (line 1 minus line 2) and line 5 (line 3 divided by line 4) and carries the result, rounded up, to page 1.

3 Start or stop

Choose either the amount to withhold from each payment, in whole dollars of $10 or more, or stop withholding. Only one box can be checked.

4 Sign and mail

Sign and date the form and mail it to the payer of your pension or annuity.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering an amount under $10, or with cents: the form wants whole dollars of $10 or more.
  • Checking both boxes instead of one.
  • Leaving out the pension or annuity ID number, which tells the payer which contract to change.
  • Sending the form to the Division of Taxation instead of your payer.
  • Requesting withholding when you won't owe New Jersey tax, for example if your income for the year is no more than $20,000 ($10,000 if single or married/CU partner filing separately).

After you fill it out

Mail the signed form to your pension or annuity payer. If you don't have the address, contact the payer.

Check your next payment statement for the New Jersey withholding.

Keep the worksheet with your tax records. FileIt keeps the finished form in your vault.

Form NJ-W-4P: frequently asked questions

Is my pension taxable in New Jersey?

Page 2 of the form gives the main rules: a pension isn't subject to New Jersey tax if you weren't a resident while receiving it, if it is a U.S. military pension, or if it is a disability pension and you are under 65. Publication GIT-1 has the details.

How much should I have withheld?

The form's worksheet divides your expected New Jersey tax, less tax paid or withheld elsewhere, by the number of payments in the year. FileIt does the arithmetic and rounds up to whole dollars.

Can I stop New Jersey withholding from my pension?

Yes. Check the second box, "I want to stop withholding", sign the form and mail it to your payer.

Do I need a new NJ-W-4P every year?

No. The form says not to file again unless you want to make a change.

Is this the same as the federal Form W-4P?

No. The federal W-4P sets federal withholding; NJ-W-4P covers only New Jersey Gross Income Tax. Many retirees file both.

Can I sign it electronically?

FileIt places an eSignature box on the signature line. If your payer requires a handwritten signature, print the form and sign it in ink.
