What is Form HSMV 82050?
Form HSMV 82050 is the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' Notice of Sale and/or Bill of Sale. It covers motor vehicles, mobile homes, off-highway vehicles and vessels. The current edition is HSMV 82050 (Rev. 03/21).
The same page works two ways. As a Notice of Sale, the seller fills in sections 1 and 3 to tell the state the vehicle or boat has been sold, and the purchaser's signature is optional. As a Bill of Sale, seller and purchaser both complete sections 1, 2 (when it applies) and 3, so each side has a signed record of the sale price and the odometer reading. The form reminds both sides that ownership doesn't change until the purchaser applies for and is issued a certificate of title.
FileIt asks for the vehicle, the purchaser, the sale and the odometer reading in plain questions, builds the purchaser line from the names you give, and prints everything onto FLHSMV's own PDF. The finished form is saved in your vault and can be sent for e-signature to the seller, co-seller, purchaser and co-purchaser. FileIt never submits it: you take or mail it to your local tax collector office.

How to fill out Form HSMV 82050, step by step
1 Notice of Sale or Bill of Sale
Choose how you're using the form. A Notice of Sale needs sections 1 and 3 from the seller. A Bill of Sale also needs the purchaser's signature in section 3, and section 2 for a motor vehicle.
2 Section 1: Description and sale
Enter the year, make, body type, model and color, the title number and issue date, and the VIN or hull number. Then name the purchaser or purchasers, give their address, the date of sale and the selling price.
3 Section 2: Odometer disclosure
Required for a motor vehicle. State whether the odometer has 5 or 6 digits, what it reads without tenths, the date read, and whether the reading reflects the actual mileage, exceeds the odometer's mechanical limits, or is not the actual mileage. FileIt prints the digits right-aligned in the form's six boxes.
4 Affidavit (when applicable)
Two lines for any statement the sale needs, such as an explanation of an odometer discrepancy.
5 Section 3: Certification and signatures
The seller prints their name and address and signs under penalties of perjury. A co-seller does the same on the next lines. For a Bill of Sale the purchaser, and any co-purchaser, sign and date below; FileIt prints their names from section 1.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the form as a Bill of Sale but leaving the purchaser's signature off.
- Leaving out the odometer section for a motor vehicle, or entering the reading with tenths.
- Choosing 5 digits for an odometer that shows six, or the other way round.
- Copying the VIN wrong: check it against the title and the vehicle itself.
- Assuming the sale changes ownership by itself. The form says ownership stays the same until the purchaser is issued a new title.
After you fill it out
Print the form or send it for e-signature, and make sure everyone who needs to sign has signed and dated their line.
Submit it to your local county tax collector office. The form points you to flhsmv.gov/offices for current addresses.
Give the purchaser a copy if it's a Bill of Sale, and keep one for yourself. FileIt keeps the signed PDF in your vault with the vehicle's other papers.

What's the difference between a Notice of Sale and a Bill of Sale here?

Do I need the odometer section for a boat?
Section 2 is marked as required for a motor vehicle. For a vessel or a mobile home you can leave it out.
Where do I submit it?
At your local county tax collector office. The form directs you to flhsmv.gov/offices for current addresses.
Does the sale transfer ownership?
The form states that ownership of the vehicle, mobile home, off-highway vehicle or vessel doesn't change until the purchaser applies for and is issued a certificate of title.
Does FileIt file the form with FLHSMV?
No. FileIt fills FLHSMV's official PDF, saves it in your vault and can send it for signature. Submitting it to the tax collector is up to you.
