What is Form ID 843 (HKSAR passport, 16+, applying abroad)?

Hong Kong permanent residents who are outside Hong Kong apply for a new or replacement HKSAR passport on form ID 843 if they are 16 or older. It covers a first passport, a renewal, and a replacement after loss or damage or a change of personal particulars. You choose a 32-page or a 48-page passport.

The form asks for your particulars as on your permanent identity card, your place of birth, a contact address or e-mail, an optional referee in Hong Kong and your declaration. Applicants aged 16 and 17 also need a parent's or legal guardian's consent in part 6. If you post the application straight to ImmD, part 8 says where to collect the passport. Where to apply abroad is set out in ImmD's guidance notes ID(E) 843A.

FileIt asks the questions in plain English and prints your answers in capitals into ImmD's own PDF, with dates box by box. It checks your age and asks for the parental consent part when it is needed. The photograph and signatures go on the printed form by hand. FileIt doesn't send anything to ImmD.

How to fill out Form ID 843 (HKSAR passport, 16+, applying abroad), step by step

1 1 and 2. Type of Passport and Application

Tick 32 or 48 pages, and first application, renewal or an application due to loss, damage or amendment of personal particulars.

2 3. Personal particulars

As stated on your Hong Kong permanent identity card: surname and given names in English, sex, date of birth, card number and date of issue (the year box takes two digits). Then your place of birth (Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, a Mainland province, or another country), address or e-mail and telephone. Chinese names are written by hand.

3 4 and 5. Additional information and referee

Anything else ImmD should know, a tick for a braille passport if you are visually impaired, and a referee in Hong Kong if applicable.

4 6. Consent for applicants aged 16 and 17

A parent or legal guardian ticks their relationship, gives their name and identity card number (or travel document for a non-resident), dates it and signs within the border.

5 7 and 8. Declaration and collection

Say where you are when you apply, date the declaration and sign within the border. If you post the application directly to ImmD, choose to collect the passport in Hong Kong or at a Chinese diplomatic mission or Mainland office. That second choice also needs form ID 853A.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using ID 843 under 16 or while in Hong Kong. Other ImmD forms cover those cases.
  • Leaving out part 6 for an applicant aged 16 or 17. FileIt asks for it when the date of birth shows it is needed.
  • Names that differ from the permanent identity card.
  • Signing outside the bordered boxes.
  • Choosing collection at a mission or Mainland office without also completing form ID 853A.

After you fill it out

Print the PDF, write Chinese names by hand, attach the photograph as ImmD's guidance notes describe, and sign within the border (with the parent's signature for ages 16 and 17).

Hand in or post the application as set out in the guidance notes ID(E) 843A, for example through a Chinese diplomatic or consular mission.

Keep a copy in your FileIt vault. When the new passport arrives, file it there with its expiry date so FileIt reminds you before the next renewal.
