What is Form TL11A?

Form TL11A, Tuition and Enrolment Certificate – University Outside Canada, is the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) certificate for students attending a university outside Canada. The university certifies the program, each session the student was registered in, the number of part-time and full-time months, and the eligible tuition paid for the year.

With the certificate, the student works out the federal tuition amount on Schedule 11 (and a provincial or territorial Schedule S11 where it applies). In Part 3, the student can authorize the transfer of unused current-year tuition, education and textbook amounts to one designated individual.

FileIt lets the student prepare the certificate for the university to check and sign, totals the months, and prints everything into the CRA's fillable TL11A PDF (edition TL11A E (25)). The officer and the student sign by hand. You keep the certificate; you don't send it with your return. FileIt doesn't file anything for you.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Including fees for transportation, parking, books, supplies, equipment, meals, lodging or professional initiation fees in the tuition amount.
  • Transferring more than the maximum transferable amount on Schedule 11 (note 1) or S11 (note 2).
  • Filling in line (2) when you resided in Quebec, Alberta, Ontario or Saskatchewan on December 31; note 2 says you don't have to.
  • Designating more than one individual.
  • Sending the certificate with the return instead of keeping it.
