What is SSB Maternity Benefit claim (MB1)?

Belize's Social Security Board pays a maternity allowance to insured women on maternity leave because of pregnancy and confinement. SSB's page says it is paid weekly for up to 14 weeks, at 80% of your average weekly insurable earnings, in two claims: one for the period before the birth and one for the period after it. Form MB1 (May 2018) is the claim form for both.

Page 1 is yours: your details as on your Social Security registration card, your employer and the last day you worked, previous employers if you have been in your job for less than a year, the bank or credit union account the benefit goes into, and the period you claim for. Page 2 is the medical certificate. A registered doctor certifies the expected date of confinement for the claim before the birth, and the doctor or midwife who attended the birth certifies it for the claim after.

FileIt asks the questions in plain English, prints your answers on the Board's own PDF and keeps the claim in your vault. You take the printed form to your doctor or midwife for page 2, then hand it in to SSB with your employer's salary record. FileIt never sends anything to the Social Security Board.

SSB Maternity Benefit claim (MB1): frequently asked questions

Can I fill in the SSB maternity claim online?

Yes. FileIt prints your answers on the Board's official PDF. You still have the medical certificate completed, sign the form and hand it in to SSB. FileIt does not submit claims.

Why do I need two claims?

SSB's page says the allowance is paid in two parts, one for the period before confinement and one for the period after, and asks for two claims on form MB1.

How much is the maternity allowance?

SSB's page says 80% of your average weekly insurable earnings in the 39 weeks before maternity leave, for up to 14 weeks, with a minimum of $44.00 and a maximum of $384.00 a week.

Who completes page 2?

A registered medical practitioner in Belize certifies the expected date of confinement. For the claim after the birth, the doctor or registered midwife who attended the confinement completes Part VI.

What is the SM2/MB form?

The salary record your employer fills in. SSB asks for it with the MB1 so it can work out your average earnings.

Is this the maternity grant?

No. The maternity grant is a separate lump sum of $300 per child. SSB's page lists a maternity benefit claim on form MB1 among the requirements for an insured woman; an insured man whose wife does not qualify claims the grant on form MB5.
