What is SSB Invalidity Benefit claim (INV1)?

Belize's Social Security Board pays invalidity benefit to insured persons under 60 who are medically certified by a medical board as permanently unable to do any type of work because of illness. SSB's page says it is paid either as a weekly pension or, if the contribution conditions for a pension are not met, as a one-time grant. Form INV1 is the claim for both.

Part 1 is yours: your name and social security number as on your registration card, address and contact details, your employer, your recent occupation and type of industry, whether the incapacity came from an accident at work, whether you are already receiving a benefit, and the test results you attach. Part 2 is a medical certificate your doctor completes, and Part 3 is completed by the medical board that Social Security sets up.

FileIt asks the questions in plain English, prints your answers on the Board's own PDF and keeps the claim in your vault. You have the medical parts completed, sign the claim and hand it in to SSB. FileIt never sends anything to the Social Security Board.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming after the thirteen weeks without a note giving the reason for the delay.
  • A name or social security number that doesn't match your registration card.
  • Leaving Part 2 for the doctor unsigned or without the medical history the form asks for.
  • Using this form for an injury at work instead of the employment injury claim.
  • Forgetting to bring your bank or credit union account details.

After you fill it out

Print the claim and take it to your doctor to complete and stamp Part 2, with your medical history attached.

Sign Part 1 and hand the claim in to SSB with your ID and bank details.

SSB arranges the medical board assessment for Part 3 and records its decision on page 4.

FileIt keeps the completed claim in your vault.

SSB Invalidity Benefit claim (INV1): frequently asked questions

Can I fill in the SSB invalidity claim online?

Yes. FileIt prints your answers on the Board's official PDF. You still have the medical parts completed, sign it and hand it in to SSB. FileIt does not submit claims.

What is the difference between the invalidity pension and grant?

SSB's page says the pension is paid weekly for as long as you remain an invalid, if you meet the contribution conditions. If you don't, a one-time invalidity grant is paid, which needs at least 26 paid contributions.

How much is the invalidity pension?

SSB's page gives a minimum of $47.00 and a maximum of $288.00 a week, worked out from your insurable earnings. The minimum invalidity grant it gives is $800.

Who decides whether I am an invalid?

A medical board set up by Social Security assesses you and completes Part 3. For the Benefit Regulations, an invalid is a person incapable of work because of a specific disease or bodily or mental disablement that is likely to remain permanent.

I am 60 or older. Can I claim?

SSB's page says invalidity benefit is for insured persons under 60. Ask SSB about the retirement benefit instead.
