What is Cancel a minor's passport travel authorisation (Polícia Federal)?

A Brazilian passport for someone under 18 can carry a travel authorisation: an endorsement in which the parents allow the child to travel abroad without one or both of them. The 'Requerimento de cancelamento de autorização de viagem incluída em passaporte de menor' is how parents ask the Federal Police to withdraw that permission. It cites article 1.634, IV of the Civil Code, which gives parents the power to grant or refuse consent for a child to travel abroad.

The form is blunt about the consequences. The request is addressed to the supervisor or manager of the passport post, and the parents declare they know the procedure cancels the child's passport, immediately and irreversibly. They also acknowledge that cancelling it does not by itself guarantee the child cannot leave the country without authorisation, and the form recommends further measures where needed, such as asking a court to include an alert in the Federal Police's system of alerts and active restrictions.

FileIt walks you through the page in plain English, checks the CPFs and the passport number's format, and places your answers on the dotted lines of the Federal Police PDF. The completed request is saved in your child's vault folder. You sign it at the passport post — FileIt never sends anything to the Federal Police.

How to fill out Cancel a minor's passport travel authorisation (Polícia Federal), step by step

1 First parent

Your full name, identity document number with its issuer and date of issue, CPF, phone with area code, and address. FileIt checks that the CPF's check digits add up.

2 Second parent

The same details for the other parent. The form expects both parents; one who cannot attend must have their signature recognised at a notary first, or follow what the Federal Police's passport service page says.

3 The request

'REQUEIRO / REQUEREMOS': you ask for the travel authorisation in the passport to be cancelled, confirming you know this cancels the passport immediately and irreversibly, and that it does not on its own stop the child leaving the country without authorisation.

4 The child and the passport

The child's full name, sex, date of birth and place of birth, and the number of the passport that contains the authorisation, copied from its data page.

5 Place, date and signatures

The city and date. The two signature lines are left blank for the parents to sign in front of the Federal Police officer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting the passport to stay valid — the form states it is cancelled immediately and irreversibly.
  • Relying on this request alone to prevent a child leaving Brazil; the form itself says it gives no such guarantee.
  • Entering a parent's document number instead of the child's passport number.
  • Signing before the appointment instead of in front of the officer.
  • Forgetting to have an absent parent's signature notarised.

After you fill it out

Print the request and check every line, especially the passport number.

Take it to a Federal Police passport post. The parents sign in front of the officer, or an absent parent's signature is notarised beforehand. The authorisation and the passport are then cancelled.

If you are worried about the child being taken abroad, ask a lawyer or the court about the extra protective measures the form mentions. FileIt keeps a copy of the request in the child's vault folder, alongside the passport record, for your own reference.

Cancel a minor's passport travel authorisation (Polícia Federal): frequently asked questions

Does cancelling the authorisation cancel the passport too?

Yes. The form states that the procedure cancels the minor's passport immediately and irreversibly, so plan for a new passport if the child still needs one.

Will this stop my child from being taken abroad?

Not on its own. The form says the measure does not guarantee protection against an unauthorised departure, and recommends extra measures where needed, such as a court request to add an alert to the Federal Police system.

Can one parent ask for the cancellation alone?

The form has a block for each parent and asks for an absent parent's signature to be notarised. If only one parent wants the cancellation, ask the Federal Police or a lawyer how to proceed in your situation.

Can I sign it with an electronic signature?

No. It is signed by hand at the passport post, so FileIt does not offer an electronic signature for this form.

Where do I find the passport number?

On the passport's data page. Brazilian passport numbers are two letters followed by six digits, such as GA123456.
