What is FAMIWAL — family allowance application?

In Belgium, family allowances (allocations familiales) are run by the regions. Families in Wallonia receive them through a family allowance fund (caisse) of their choice. FAMIWAL, the Caisse publique wallonne d'allocations familiales, is the public one. If you aren't affiliated with any fund yet, you apply with this pack. The edition covered here is version V13, dated September 2025.

The pack has three annexes. Annex 1 is the application itself. It covers you, your own and your partner's situation (a disability, a long illness, work for an international organisation or abroad, benefits from another country), up to four children, any allowances paid by a body outside Belgium, who raises the children, and the parents' details when they live elsewhere. Annex 2 gives the current account the allowances are paid into, and annex 3 asks FAMIWAL to take you on as your fund. Each annex is dated and signed.

FileIt explains every question in English with the French wording alongside. You give your name, address and national register number once, and FileIt prints them on all three annexes. It checks the national register number and IBAN check digits and writes your answers onto the dotted lines of FAMIWAL's own PDF, with dates in the Belgian DD/MM/YYYY format. The finished PDF is saved in your vault. FileIt doesn't send it for you. You sign the annexes and post them to FAMIWAL or email them, or you apply online in myFAMIWAL instead.

How to fill out FAMIWAL — family allowance application, step by step

1 10. About you

Give your surname, first name, date of birth, national register number, address, phone and email, then your spouse's or partner's name and date of birth. The form's note says women give their maiden name.

2 20. and 30. Your situation and your partner's

Tick only what applies. That might be a disability of at least 66% (with the date and the institution that recognised it), illness for at least six months, work for an international organisation or outside Belgium, social benefits from another country, or no occupation.

3 40. The children

For each child, up to four, give the name, date of birth and your relationship. Then tick whether the child has a recognised disability of at least 66%, was placed in your household by a court or a placement service, or lives outside Belgium (with the country).

4 42. Allowances from abroad

Say whether a body outside Belgium pays, or has paid, allowances for any child in your household. If so, list the child, the body and its file number, up to six rows.

5 50. and 60. Who raises the children, and the parents

Say whether the children live in the household of the mother or the elder co-parent, or with someone else, such as another person or an institution, with their details and since when. Part 60 is only for the parents' details when they haven't been given above.

6 Annex 2: the bank account

Give the IBAN and BIC of a current account, and whether it is in your name alone or held jointly with your partner. FAMIWAL checks it with your bank. Savings accounts and other people's accounts aren't accepted.

7 Annex 3: affiliation, and signing

Tick your current fund if you have one (Camille, Parentia, Infino, Kidslife or another). FileIt dates all three annexes. You sign each one by hand.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Giving a savings account or someone else's account. The form says payment goes only to a current account in your name or a joint one with your partner.
  • Forgetting one of the three signatures: annexes 1, 2 and 3 are each signed.
  • Leaving out a family member who lives or works abroad. The form asks for this to be declared.
  • Getting the national register number wrong. It is on the back of the identity card, and its last two digits are check digits.
  • Not telling FAMIWAL straight away when your family, work or financial situation changes. The form asks you to report it spontaneously.

After you fill it out

Print the PDF and sign annexes 1, 2 and 3 by hand beside the dates.

Post the annexes to FAMIWAL, BP 80 000, Ville basse, B-6000 Charleroi, or email them to [email protected]. FileIt doesn't send anything.

FAMIWAL checks your account with your bank and contacts you about anything missing. Its regional offices in Charleroi, Libramont, Liège, Mons, Namur and Wavre can help.

FileIt keeps the finished PDF in your vault, filed under the person you filled it for.
