What is Form 47A — details of a family member aged 18 or over?

When someone applies for an Australian visa, the Department of Home Affairs wants information about every member of their family unit. For each member aged 18 or over — typically an adult son or daughter, or another dependent relative — that information goes on Form 47A. A separate form is completed for each of them, and it's needed whether or not they will migrate.

The form covers the family member's identity and passport, other names and ID numbers, relationship status, address and phone numbers, whether they'll migrate and where they'd live, languages and English level, education, employment history and current job, who supports them financially, their parents, brothers and sisters and dependent children, and every address where they've lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years. It ends with the Australian values statement and a declaration signed by the main applicant, the main applicant's partner if they have one, and the family member.

FileIt fills the current Form 47A (design date 10/20) in the Department's own PDF. Names with accents and letters such as ł, ș and Cyrillic print correctly, long answers are wrapped onto the ruled lines, the age box is worked out from the date of birth, and the result is kept in your FileIt vault.

How to fill out Form 47A — details of a family member aged 18 or over, step by step

1 Part A: the main applicant

The main visa applicant's full name, date of birth and file number.

2 Part B: questions 4–14

The family member's names (including in their own script and other spellings), sex, date of birth, place of birth, citizenships, country of residence, passport and national identity card.

3 Part B: questions 15–22

Other ID numbers, relationship status, address and phone numbers, whether they'll migrate and which state or territory they'd live in, their main language, English level and other languages.

4 Part B: questions 23–26

Up to three places of education, up to four previous jobs, whether they're employed now (or why not), and their main and other sources of financial support.

5 Parts C and D: family and addresses

Parents, all brothers and sisters, and any dependent children, with relationship-status codes; then every address of 12 months or more in the last 10 years, plus any Australian addresses.

6 Parts E and F: extra details and signatures

Anything that didn't fit, by question number, then the Australian values statement (for a family member who's migrating) and the declaration.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one form for two adult children — each needs their own Form 47A.
  • Skipping the form because the family member isn't migrating — it's still required.
  • Leaving out half, step or adopted brothers and sisters at question 27.
  • Leaving the address history short — it must cover the last 10 years even if there's only one address.
  • Forgetting the values statement signature for a family member who is migrating.

After you fill it out

The main applicant, the family member and, if applicable, the main applicant's partner sign and date the declaration; a migrating family member also signs the values statement. Print from FileIt or send the PDF for e-signature.

Include the form, with evidence of qualifications and any medical report, in the visa application as the Department asks. FileIt doesn't lodge it.

Keep a copy in your FileIt vault — the Department may ask about any of the details later.

Does a family member who isn't migrating need Form 47A?

Yes. The form says it must be completed for each member of the family unit aged 18 or over, whether migrating or not.

Who signs the Australian values statement?

The family member, if they're applying to migrate — unless they're being added to an application lodged before 15 October 2007. A family member who isn't migrating doesn't sign it.

What if there isn't enough room?

Use Part E — give the question number and the extra details — and attach a separate sheet if that runs out too.
