What is a music producer agreement?
Most disputes between artists and producers start after the song takes off: who owns the master, whether the producer was promised points, why their name is missing from the streaming credits, or who cleared that sample. A producer agreement settles those questions while everyone is still excited about working together.
This template lists the tracks and whether the producer is also mixing and mastering, sets a delivery date with stems and a number of revision rounds, and says who pays studio and session costs. It covers a per-track fee — either a flat fee or an advance recouped from royalties — an optional royalty with six-monthly statements and an audit right, who owns the masters (the artist once paid, or the producer under a licence), disclosure and clearance of samples, songwriting shares handled through a separate split sheet, credit wording, use of names, and what happens if the deal ends early.

Tips before you send it
- Sign a split sheet for any song the producer helped write — the producer agreement only covers the recording.
- Ask the producer to list every sample and loop before delivery, and don't release until they're cleared.
- If you're paying an advance, keep a running total of recouped royalties so statements are easy to check.
- Make sure the producer's professional name is exactly how it should appear on streaming platforms.

Music producer agreement: frequently asked questions
What are producer points?
A royalty for the producer, usually expressed as a percentage of the record's price or of the artist's income from the master. One point is one percent. The template lets you write the rate in your own words, or leave it out for a flat fee.
Who owns the master recording?
You choose. Usually the artist owns it once the fee or advance is paid. Alternatively the producer keeps ownership and licenses it to the artist on terms you write in.
Does this cover songwriting and publishing?
No. If the producer co-writes, record each writer's share in a songwriter split sheet. The producer's publishing follows that split sheet, not this agreement.
Can it be signed electronically?
In most countries, including the US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the UK, the EU (eIDAS) and Canada, an electronic signature is generally valid for an agreement like this one. FileIt keeps an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion with the signed PDF as evidence of who signed and when.
Is this template free?
Yes. The template is free to use with the eSignature app in FileIt, and the people you send it to don't need a FileIt account to sign.
