What is SKV 7880 - Marriage impediment examination (hindersprövning)?

Before a wedding in Sweden, Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) must check that there is no legal impediment to the marriage. This check is called hindersprövning. SKV 7880 is the paper application for it. Both of you give your identity, and each of you declares on your honour whether you are related in a way the Marriage Code forbids and whether you have been married or in a registered partnership before.

When the check is done, Skatteverket sends you both a certificate (Hindersprövning - Intyg) and a form for the officiant to complete after the wedding. Page 2 says the certificate is valid for four months. Hand both documents to your officiant before the ceremony. If you are both registered in Sweden, Skatteverket's e-service is often the easier route. The paper form suits couples where one partner isn't registered in Sweden, or who prefer paper.

FileIt asks each question in English with the Swedish label beside it, and fills in your own details from your vault. It checks personal identity numbers and the minimum age of 18, and prints your answers into Skatteverket's own PDF, which is saved in your vault. You both sign by hand and post it. FileIt never sends it.

Who needs to fill out SKV 7880 - Marriage impediment examination (hindersprövning)?

  • Couples planning a civil or religious wedding in Sweden.
  • Couples where one partner lives abroad or isn't registered in Sweden, so the e-service can't be used.
  • Couples who don't have Swedish e-identification.
  • People who were married before, including those divorced or widowed abroad, who will need to show proof alongside the form.

When to use SKV 7880 - Marriage impediment examination (hindersprövning)

  • Well before the wedding date. The certificate is valid for four months, so don't apply too early either.
  • When both of you can sign the same paper form. It isn't examined until both have signed.
  • If you're both registered in Sweden, consider Skatteverket's e-service instead.
  • For a wedding abroad, the rules of that country apply. Ask the authorities there what they need.

What you need before you start

  • Each partner's Swedish personal identity number, or date of birth if they have none.
  • Each partner's full name, address, phone number and email.
  • Honest answers about whether you are related and whether either of you has been married or in a registered partnership before.
  • For a divorce or a spouse's death abroad that isn't in the Swedish population register: proof, such as a divorce judgment or a death certificate.
  • For a partner not registered in Sweden: an ID document showing they are 18 or over, and a recent certificate of civil status from their home country, ideally dated within the last four months.

How to fill out SKV 7880 - Marriage impediment examination (hindersprövning), step by step

1 Date and the two future spouses

The date at the top. Then each of you, side by side, gives your personal identity number (YYYYMMDD-XXXX) or, without one, your date of birth (YYYY-MM-DD), and your full name. Write clearly, because Skatteverket reads the form by machine.

2 Declaration on your honour

Each of you answers two questions. Are you related in one of the ways set out in chapter 2, section 3 of the Marriage Code? And have you been married or had a registered partnership before? The form explains the kinship rule. You may not marry a parent, grandparent, child, sibling or half-sibling, nor an uncle, aunt or cousin, and adoption counts the same as blood relationship.

3 Other information

Anything Skatteverket should know, such as a wish to have the certificates sent to an address other than your registered one, or the documents you're attaching.

4 Signatures and contact details

Each of you signs by hand. FileIt prints your name, street address, postcode and town, country if you live outside Sweden, phone and email beneath the signature box, so Skatteverket can reach you with questions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Only one partner signing. The application isn't examined until both have signed.
  • Applying too early. The certificate is valid for four months.
  • Not proving a divorce or a spouse's death that happened abroad and isn't recorded in Sweden.
  • Sending an old certificate of civil status for a partner not registered in Sweden. Skatteverket prefers one dated within four months.
  • Writing unclearly. Skatteverket asks for block letters so the form can be read by machine.
  • Forgetting that the wedding doesn't change your surname. A name change is a separate application.

After you fill it out

Print the form and both sign it by hand.

Attach any proof needed, such as foreign divorce or death documents, or the non-registered partner's ID and certificate of civil status.

Post it to Skatteverkets inläsningscentral, FE 2002, 839 86 Östersund, the address printed on the form. FileIt doesn't send it.

When the certificates arrive (by digital mailbox or post), give both to your officiant before the wedding. After the ceremony the officiant notifies Skatteverket, which registers you as married.

SKV 7880 - Marriage impediment examination (hindersprövning): frequently asked questions

What is hindersprövning?

It's Skatteverket's check that there's no legal impediment to your marriage, for example being too young, already married, or closely related. You need the resulting certificate before a wedding in Sweden.

How long is the certificate valid?

Page 2 of the form says the hindersprövning certificate is valid for four months. The last date you can marry is shown on the officiant's form (Vigsel - Intyg).

One of us isn't registered in Sweden. What else is needed?

Page 2 asks for documents from that person's home authorities showing they can marry under Swedish law. That means ID showing they are at least 18, and a recent certificate of civil status, ideally from the last four months.

Can we apply online instead?

If you're both registered in Sweden, Skatteverket's e-service can usually be used instead of this paper form.

Will my surname change when we marry?

No. You keep your surname unless you apply to change it. That's a separate application, which Skatteverket describes at skatteverket.se/namn.

Is there an English version of SKV 7880?

No. The form is in Swedish only. FileIt asks each question in English and prints your answers into the Swedish form.

Does FileIt send the application?

No. FileIt fills Skatteverket's PDF and saves it in your vault. You both sign it and post it yourselves.
