What is SF100 Sure Start Maternity Grant?
A Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off payment of £500 from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to help with the costs of having a child. You don't pay it back, and it doesn't affect your other benefits. You usually qualify if you or your partner get a qualifying benefit, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and it's your first child or a multiple birth. It can also cover a baby under 12 months you've become responsible for, for example through adoption or as a kinship carer.
The SF100 is 16 pages long because it covers every route: you and your partner, your benefits, the pregnancy or birth, becoming responsible for someone else's baby, other children in the household, and the bank account to pay into. You can claim from 11 weeks before the week the baby is due until 6 months after the birth, or within 6 months of a child being placed with you.
FileIt only asks the questions your answers make relevant, follows the form's 'go to question' jumps for you, and prints everything into DWP's own SF100 PDF. You then sign it with a black ink pen and send it with your MATB1. FileIt doesn't send anything for you.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Claiming too early (more than 11 weeks before the due week) or more than 6 months after the birth.
- Not sending original evidence of the pregnancy or birth. DWP can't accept photocopies.
- Leaving out stepchildren or your partner's children under 16, who count as children living with you.
- Giving an appointee's claim with an account that isn't in the appointee's name.
- Applying from Scotland, where the Pregnancy and Baby Payment applies instead.
After you fill it out
Print the form, check every page, and sign and date the declaration with a black ink pen.
Send it with your original MATB1 or health professional's statement, and any adoption or order documents, to Freepost DWP SSMG. You don't need a stamp or postcode. Or take it to your Jobcentre Plus office.

How much is the Sure Start Maternity Grant?
GOV.UK says it's £500, and you don't have to pay it back. If you're expecting twins or triplets and already have children, how much you get depends on the children you already have.
Which benefits do I need?
GOV.UK lists Universal Credit, Pension Credit and income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or a Support for Mortgage Interest loan. The form also lists older benefits such as Income Support and Child Tax Credit.
Can I get the grant if I already have children?
Usually only if this is a multiple birth, or in some other cases the form describes, such as being a kinship carer for a child who isn't your own.
What evidence do I send?
A MATB1 form or a written statement from your doctor or midwife confirming the pregnancy or birth. DWP asks for originals, not photocopies.
Can someone else fill it in for me?
Yes. Someone can fill it in and sign it for you if they're your appointee, have power of attorney, or send a letter from you agreeing to them making the claim. They complete question 45.
