What is a fitness challenge agreement?
Weight-loss and step challenges are a fun way to get a group moving, at work, in the family or among old friends. They also tend to raise the same questions halfway through. Does a photo of the scale count? What happens when someone is ill? Who decides if a run was really 10 km? Written rules answer those up front, and signing them gives everyone a small nudge of commitment.
This template sets the challenge name, dates and who's taking part, and how the winner is decided: percentage of weight lost, steps, workouts, distance or a points system you describe. Each participant can add a personal goal. It covers weekly check-ins, what counts as proof, keeping actual weights private, light-hearted forfeits for missed check-ins and the winner's prize, with no money staked. Fair play and a firm put-your-health-first section round it off, and anyone can drop out without penalty.

Using the fitness challenge agreement, step by step
1 Set up the challenge
Name the challenge, enter the organiser and the participant, list everyone taking part and set the start and final dates.
2 Decide how to score
Pick what counts: weight lost as a percentage, steps, workouts, distance or points. Add point rules if you use them, and a personal goal for this participant if they want one.
3 Agree check-ins and proof
Choose when everyone checks in and what proof is needed. Decide whether weights are shared as percentages or as actual numbers.
4 Pick forfeits and a prize, then send
Choose fun forfeits and a prize. Send a copy to each participant, or add everyone as a signer in the editor.
Tips before you send it
- Scoring weight loss as a percentage of starting weight is fairer than counting kilos or pounds.
- Use the same scale, at the same time of day, for every weigh-in.
- Keep forfeits silly, not embarrassing. Healthy snacks for the group or wearing the loser's hat both work.
- Anyone with a health condition, an injury or a pregnancy should check with a doctor before starting.
- Celebrate effort as well as results. Plenty of people win their own challenge without topping the table.

Fitness challenge agreement: frequently asked questions
Can we bet money on the challenge?
This template deliberately uses non-cash forfeits and prizes. Cash pools can run into gambling rules or workplace policies in some places, and they tend to encourage unhealthy shortcuts.
How is the winner decided?
By the measure you choose, worked out from the first and last check-ins. The organiser settles questions about the rules and can disqualify anyone found cheating.
What if someone gets ill or injured?
They stop, and the organiser pauses their score or lets them finish on a gentler target with no forfeit. Anyone can leave at any time without penalty.
How do I get everyone to sign?
Send a copy to each participant, or add all of them as signers in the editor before you send. No one needs a FileIt account to sign.
