What is a driving lessons agreement?

A driving lessons agreement is used by driving instructors and driving schools to set the terms of a course of lessons with a learner driver. It records the essentials an instructor should check before a learner gets behind the wheel — a valid permit, eyesight and any medical conditions — along with the business terms that cause friction: packages that expire, last-minute cancellations and the use of the instructor's car on test day.

This template lists the package, vehicle (the instructor's dual-control car or the learner's own), pickup area and first lesson. It covers the learner's permit and fitness to drive, the instructor's right to take control or end a lesson, phone and seat-belt rules, insurance and roadworthiness when the learner's own car is used, the package price and optional expiry, cancellation notice, refunds for unused lessons, the test-day fee and responsibility for fines. For a learner under the age of majority, a parent or guardian signs instead.

Tips before you send it

  • Check the learner's permit in person at the first lesson, not just the number on the form.
  • If lessons are in the learner's own car, ask for proof that its insurance covers learner tuition.
  • Many places license driving instructors — add your licence number so parents can check it.
  • Use the package expiry to keep your diary manageable, but explain it at sign-up.

Driving lessons agreement: frequently asked questions

Who signs for a learner under 18?

A parent or guardian. Enter their name and they sign as the client, consenting to the lessons, agreeing to pay, and confirming the learner's details. Without a parent name, the signer confirms they're the adult learner.

Can the instructor end a lesson early?

Yes. The instructor may take control, end a lesson or refuse to start one if the learner seems affected by alcohol, drugs, medication or tiredness, or conditions are unsafe. Those lessons are charged in full.

Are unused lessons refunded?

If the learner ends the agreement early, unused lessons are refunded at the package rate less any package discount. Lessons not used before the package expires aren't refunded, unless the instructor couldn't provide them.

Does the agreement guarantee passing the test?

No. The instructor gives honest feedback on readiness but can't guarantee a pass or a set number of lessons to reach test standard.
