What is a pet at work agreement?

A well-behaved dog under a desk can lift a whole office. A barking one, or one that jumps up at a colleague who is frightened of dogs, can do the opposite. A short agreement lets you say yes to a request while making it clear that permission comes with conditions and can be taken back.

This agreement records the pet's name, description, vaccinations and treatments, the days it may come in, where it may and may not go, and the toilet area. It sets behaviour standards, names a backup person to collect the pet, and puts colleagues with allergies or fears first. The owner is responsible for damage and reports any injury the same day, and you can record whether they carry pet liability insurance. An optional trial period is followed by the right to suspend or withdraw permission for a good reason, which is not a disciplinary matter.

Tips before you send it

  • Ask the team before saying yes — a single allergy or a fear of dogs should change the plan.
  • Check your lease and building rules; some landlords don't allow animals at all.
  • Have one pet per day in the office at first if several people want to join in.
  • Agree a quiet place for the pet away from walkways and kitchens.

Pet at work agreement: frequently asked questions

Who is responsible if the dog damages something?

The employee. The agreement makes them responsible for the pet's behaviour and for the reasonable cost of repairing or cleaning any damage, and asks them to report any injury the same day.

Can we withdraw permission?

Yes, for a good reason such as behaviour, a complaint, an allergy or building rules. The company gives reasons and, except in an emergency, a short warning. Withdrawal isn't a disciplinary matter.

Is this for assistance dogs?

No. Assistance and service animals are usually covered by disability and accessibility law, not by a permission like this one. Treat them as a workplace adjustment instead.

Can it cover pets other than dogs?

Yes. Enter any species in the pet's description — the rules on behaviour, areas and damage apply the same way.
